wireless router
« on: April 24, 2009, 08:12:21 AM »

TD is contemplating migrating from VirginMedia to Zen, and in discussing this yesterday with a neighbour has been given ( given ) a wireless router. !

I wonder if anyone would care to comment on the efficiency of this model. As far as I can establish, it is a "cheapy" and I don't know if it would be up to the job or not.

It is a Zoom X6 model 5590. It is new.......the box has never been opened and I understand was purchased about a year ago.

I would be using that on a line some 187 metres long, which is capable of a line speed of 7.5 Mbs.

Is it worth hooking this up, or should I ignore it and go for the recommended Netgear job ?

Thank you in advance for any advices.  :)

I agree with Colin. I've never used a Zoom personally, but with your nice short line it should work fine, and you've really nothing to lose by trying.

Such a short line should be easily able to sync at the full 8Mb.  If you were on a long line or adsl2+ with higher speeds,  then I perhaps would suggest a different router, but on a short line it should be perfectly fine.

Hi TD,

The Zoom modem in my honest opinion is a cheap and dirty modem. It will work but you can of course get better speeds from other modems. As has been said before, at 187m's your line should make the full 8mb. If its not then I would be asking why.

Keep an eye on the power also as sudden fluctuations can cause a lot of issues with modems.  If you have any issues with any of the Migration please do not hestitate in letting me know.

Thank you, Azzaka, for your words of caution.

I had a feeling in my water that the Zoom was not the best.........simply because there has never ( I think ) been a mention of one in these forums....most folks are on something else. Hence my original post.
Will go for Netgear or one of the Speedtouch routers off the Zen site. I don't really need wireless, there is only one of me and one PC here, so the wired Speedtouch could well be the thing.

Power fluctuations are a fact of life out here in the sticks.........as are power outages, one or two per week on average in the winter, so all and any routers will suffer from time to time.

Will let you know how the migration goes, and thank you for your interest and for your comments. :)

Hi TD,

A small UPS is a good way of reducing power fluctuations. A bigger one would let you continue using your internet connection from a laptop during an outage.

Kind regards,
Walter

I have been trying to find out what make/model the free router is that Plusnet send you without any success.

I know they have a wireless one and a wired one.

The Thompson TG585v7 is the wireless one.

If you look at the read more info link for Plusnet Vaule it says "Free wireless 4-port router Wirelessly connect up to 10 devices"

They did use to provide a wired router but afaik that was for the old Option 1 account and was a  ST516
