BTw speedtest issues.
« on: May 12, 2007, 02:45:42 PM »

Hi there newbie here.
I have been having terrible multple issues regarding slow speed over the last severn months with BT broadband.(I'm a very patient person) After eventually getting wholesale to admit fault at the exchange a lift and shift was done, and for two weeks excellent 6.0Meg download speed 24/7 then bang, one evening my download speed drops at 18:00 till midnight from 6Meg to 500kps. I have tried to use the www.speedtester.bt.com to prove to BT Wholesale that my speed has dropped and as all exchange checkers tell me there is no congestion(BT Broadband also say this)There can only either be traffic shaping or throttling. But when i try to use the BTw tester i get the following message after i input my phone number and for nearly a month now i have not had an answer why?Aparently BT Wholsale have told BT Broadband they dont know why I get this message.Laughable!!!

The IP address discovered on the network associated with your telephone number:xxxxxxxxxxx, did not match the one we have logged from this browser/connection. Please check your telephone number and try again. If problem persists please contact your CP.

Also i have to point out that your link http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/btwspeedtest.htm shows that the connection details are:-

USER: speedtest@speedtest_domain
PASS: testing

And i have been told the connection details are:

USER: speedtester@speedtest_domain
PASS: testing

My Router stats:-

Statistics Downstream Upstream
Line Rate 7392 Kbps 448 Kbps
Noise Margin 11.9 dB 17.0 dB
Line Attenuation 36.0 dB 19.0 dB
Output Power 19.8 dBm 12.1 dBm

Very slowly becomming less and less patient after severn months.
BTW I'm on opton1 with BT and I have confirmed with them that i have never exceeded my monthly 5gb

Hi Pixie100, welcome to the forum.

The present BT speedtester at the reference you gave above doesn't require you to change the login details in your router. Just go to http://speedtester.bt.com using your normal internet connection.

Hi Eric
Thanks for the reply but both BT Broadband and BT Wholesale tell me that i have to change my login on my voyager 220v to speedtester@speedtest_domain and if i do try to access www.speedtester.bt.com on usual login browser wont access website and at least i can access it with speedtester login but just get stupid message after i put my phone number in saying my IP does not match the one they have logged. I reckon they must have screwed up data on my details after they have done the lift and shift.Only explanation i can come up with as so far they have come up with nothing.

That's a bit strange then. I suppose that it must be a peculiarity of BT Broadband. I'm with Zen, and I can use that site with no trouble without changing my router login (I did it just now to check, and it worked fine). Kitz will probably know the answer, but at the moment she's up to her ears in plaster dust and wallpaper paste. :)

Hi Pixe100.
Try resetting your web browser when you get that error message.
Good luck.

Hi pixie and welcome

Theres actually 2 speedtest domains -  one is done from somewhere near the Manchester RAS, and the other is on a server at St Albans HQ.

speedtest@speedtest_domain
is the correct login that you should be using to do a speedtest to check for contention.
(see image below)

>> wont access website

If this is the case then once you have logged in as above then try using the address http://217.32.105.42 in your browser

On occasions the speedtest domain is a bit quirky, and there have been the odd reports that if you are routed via certain RAS's, then you can at times encounter some problems.
Strictly speaking since the "new tester" was developed last year, BTw much prefer that we access via http://www.speedtester.bt.com which you should be able to access directly without changing any login details in your router.

>> I suppose that it must be a peculiarity of BT Broadband. I'm with Zen,

Im with PN and have no problems accessing either but in a mo I'll swap logins to BT RIN to check.

Just swapped over and accessed via http://test.speedtester.bt.com:50301/

It didnt actually ask me for any logon details..  I just input my phone no, and away it went.

Just tried speed tester and its working for me, but it can be fiddly like Kitz says.
I sometimes get the error message like 'Pixe100' describes.

When i use speedtest@speedtest_domain   I get the message

You appear to be logged in as speedtest@speedtest_domain, however for the initial performance test can you please not use a BT test account or the Speedtester login. Please reconfigure your service to use your normal DSL account. If you are unsure how to do this or think this message is in error, please contact your service provider for advice.
Just want to be able to access this speedtester to prove the slow speed i am getting. So frustrated!!!!!

Unfortunately using speedtester@speedtest_domain always appears to return the result

The IP address discovered on the network associated with your telephone number:01xxxxxxxx, did not match the one we have logged from this browser/connection. etc

>>> When i use speedtest@speedtest_domain   I get the message

Ive just got that message too using both
http://217.32.105.42 and
http://217.35.209.142

When I spoke to the guy in charge of the BT speedtest domain a while ago, there were aware of the above loop-hole, so it looks like theyve now plugged it so that we cant access it anymore. :(

You really should be able to access a normal test via

http://test.speedtester.bt.com

Once your speeds get below a certain level then you should be given the opportunity to do "Test 3" which is where it takes you on to the speedtest domain.

Just thought - When you say download speed drops at 18.00 which protocol do you mean by "downloading", iirc BT are shaping the likes of p2p downloads in the evenings.
Your http speeds should be ok though.. what happens if you do a speedtest from somewhere like BBMax?

Cannot access http://test.speedtester.bt.com , page will not load in browser(Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage). Speed tests i do are http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/
http://www.speedtest.net/
http://www.btopenworld.com/speedtest
http://www.broadbandchoices.co.uk/speed-test.asp
http://www.broadbandwatchdog.co.uk/speed-test.php
Always do several to make sure i get a good average.
Can only load http://test.speedtester.bt.com when i change the router login to speedtester@speedtest_domain.

Have you tried a different browser? http://test.speedtester.bt.com works fine here with Firefox.
