Speedtouch 546v6 firmware question. Using Zen Internet.
« on: April 23, 2009, 12:14:24 PM »

Hello all, another newbie here.
I posted a similar question on the Zen Forums and was advised to post it here as the response was pretty non-existent.
At the time I had switched from an old Draytek Vigor 2600 (plain vanilla version) to a Speedtouch 546v6 running the 6.2.17.5 firmware. I am with Zen and was on the old fixed 2Mb ADSL and swapping the router was painless and it worked fine.

I then re-graded to the Zen 8000 Pro package and we had a little difficulty with the BT end of things it transpires although at the time I was looking at everything being the culprit and wanted to ask if 6.2.17.5 was everyone 'preferred' firmware for said Speedtouch 546v6 router especially if your a Zen customer but basically whoever your with?

Anyway the question still stands, do you use that version or is there an older/newer version everyone (or just you) think is more suitable on Zen here in the UK.

The problem I had was the router kept disconnecting every 2 minutes (the Vigor did it too) so the fault was traced by the wonderful Zen support people to BT who eventually fixed the fault (probably to do with my SNR margin being too low). Times like these make me glad I stick with Zen, cannot praise them highly enough.

So any comments on the preferred or 'best' firmware would be appreciated and any useful tips on getting the best out of this router, the 546v6 (or have I bought a lemon and should have the Netgear 834 or some other box instead?)

Cheers

David

Hi and welcome
AFAIK the Speedtouch 546v6 comes with 6.2.17.5 firmware installed which is perfectly fine.

Some users prefer to downgrade the firmware if they can to 6.1.4.3 purely for the reason that it is the last version which allows full DMTtool tweaking of the Target SNR.

Thank you. I shall look into this more thoroughly and post my findings.
Seems the link the 6.1.4.3 is not available to me, at least using Firefox! Will keep looking and have a play.
DMT working though, seems I am on Interleaving so will test online games and if it needs to change.

Edit: Found the link to 6.1.4.3. Not going to change anything though until I have had the phone line rewired from where it hits the house (roof eves - going to have it all replaced from there to the Master socket and have the house plumbed with Cat5e (or 6) and get rid of the existing extension wire - attenuation of 29 downstream and that seems a bit high)
Plus I am still in the 10 day training period.

Many Thanks

Hi dcbaxter,

There's quite a difference in price between Cat5e UTP, Cat 6 UTP and FTP ranging from £69 to £92 up to £304-75 for a 305 M boxed reel.
Similarly with the range of sockets including some with a 9th slot for the earth / drain wire.
For some applications the four gang vertical sockets are useful as the jumper lead remains close to the wall.
See:-

Kind regards,
Walter

HI Walter and thank you for the tip.

I have used Cable Monkey before and would do again but the four gang verticle sockets sounds interesting.

We are hoping to pull the garage down for an extension and the phone line will need moving then plus internal work will mean I have an excuse to dig up the carpet and floorboards and lay some proper cable. Then stick the router into the master socket and invest in a proper gigabit switch.

The stuff of dreams :D

Found the link to 6.1.4.3

I don't think 6.1.4.3 will work with the 546v6.  The version you need will be 6.1.4.6

Hi Mate,

When the server comes back up, i'll send you a copy of the 585v6's firmware that was written for Zen. This has the Zen templates in it.

Can you PM your email address please and I'll email you the new firmware. My server that it was hosted on is having a PSU issue now (murphey's law), it should be back up within the next 3 days, but in case I shoot the email through.
