Weird problem preventing SP1 installing
« on: April 16, 2009, 05:01:46 PM »

Now this is one I've been round in circles on; just wondering if anyone has seen anything similar and fixed it.
I'm trying to "sort out" the PC belonging to the mother of one of my neighbours, it's a Packard Bell of some sort.
Now I'm not sure exactly what happened but I think they let the virus protection lapse, got something nasty but managed to clean it off and install AVG (paid for).

Nonetheless it was a bit of a mess, now tidied up (mostly), but refuses point blank to install SP1 - it downloads and starts to install, but fails (will dig out the code later). The code is a vague "you need to clean up Windows Update" type message, but going through all the recommendations achieves nothing. I've tried downloading the full SP1 package and it gets the same result.

Strangely, Windows Update (now changed to Microsoft Update) runs fine and installs all the other fixes it should, so the whole process isn't broken, just SP1. Weird.

Meanwhile I've just flagged the SP1 update as "hidden" so that it doesn't interfere.

Any thoughts anyone?

If you have an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) connected to your computer, disconnect the connecting serial cable before installing SP1. The installation automatically attempts to detect devices connected to serial ports, and UPS equipment can cause problems with the detection process

No UPS, or indeed any peripherals at all, but thanks for the thought.

The error code I got on a standalone install was 0x80070002 and an indirect link to KB947366.
This suggests possible interference from other programs, e.g. antivirus, so I'm going to remove everything like that and try again.

Hope it helps

Hmm, this has got AVG. I tried disabling it but not uninstalling.
If I can get my hands on it again I'll try that, thanks.

No luck but thanks for the pointer.
Uninstalled AVG and also ran the removal tool but the results are the same.
Cleared out all the files as recommended in the MS articles - no change.
Even tried running it in Safe Mode.

Time to give up or reinstall.  :'(

Hi

That is a weird one .
btw is your vista instalation standard ?or an  ( OEM's versions preinstalled from your hardware manufacturer, installations customized with tools as vLite and so on) apparently that can be the cause of  the problem.

I run Mcafee Security suite and Vista Home Premium.I installed SP1 through M/S auto update without any problems at all.
