Tiscali BB Service Outages
« on: April 09, 2009, 02:52:14 PM »

Hi. I'm a Tiscali Customer who like many others is suffering from Tiscali's random service outages. For example; for the 2nd time since Sunday, last night at about 9:45 - the BB connection ceases and is replaced with the green BT Wholesale Service Page. Tiscali technical support has been about as much use as a 'chocolate fireguard' - recently, when my Tiscali supplied router died, Tiscali tech support asked me if I had another PSU to try incase the original had failed?!!  When I advised them that I hadn't and referred them to the specific voltages of these adaptors, I was told 'the voltage doesn't matter'. Anyway, I digress. Are you any the wiser as to what is happening with tiscali at the moment?

Many thanks.

Hi and welcome.

I've got no personal experience of Tiscali (thank heavens) but as you obviously know, they're in all sorts of trouble at the moment. I think that the best advice is to get out if you're not still tied to a long contract, and move to a decent ISP.

There are some other Tiscali users here who will probably have something to say.

Hi Charlie1375,

You'll see at:-

http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/tiscali/3611485-tiscali-outage-in-essex.html?fpart=all&vc=1
that Tiscali are affected by the fibre break under the Thames particularly if you're in the Essex area.

Kind regards,
Walter

I notice they issued this release saying that service should have been restored by 3am Thus morning.

Quote
BT have continued repairs throughout the night, and both affected IPStream centrals returned to full service at approx 03:30. All impacted services have now been restored, but remain at risk whilst BT engineering works continue. It will still be some time until a fully normal service is resumed.

Many thanks for all your replies. It seems that the problems experienced by Tiscali have stretched far and wide and I am just one of many. Your advice to change ISP's as soon as, seems to be the best advice. Instead of spending hard earnt cash dialling Customer Services at Tiscali, I'll email them and see how much contract time I have left with them. Can I say what an excellent site you have here, I'm learning a lot.

Many thanks again.  :)

Last nights post was a 'quicky' as I was elsewhere and was just checking the forum.  But did the the service report update strike anyone else as being a little strange?

They claim to have lost 2 centrals due to the Ilford Cable break.  They weren't the only ISP affected and I know Plusnet also lost a couple of centrals too.

But if you compare the amount of Tiscali customers to the amount of Plusnet customers.
Then think about how many centrals they should have pro-rata.
Then think how it affected Plusnet customers and how it impacted Tiscali customers... it makes you wonder just how contended those Tiscali pipes are.

The BTw holding page is something that occurs when a pipe reaches 'BTw policing' and says absolutely no more connections for this pipe as its crammed jammed full.

For an ISP the size of Tiscali and their no of customers you wouldnt expect the loss of 2 centrals to have such an impact - but the fact that it did... makes you wonder just what rate of contention those pipes are running at... and I find it quite surprising that its taken just 2 for things to start to grind to a halt. - or then again maybe not.

AFAIK although the cable break did affect many ISPs its only Tiscali that appears to have been policed (and quite badly) for exceeding BTw session limits on the remaining centrals.  Anyone else see what Im getting at?

Thats a very good explanation Kitz of what actually happens with 'pipe' etc, especially to us BB novices.  :)

@ Kitz,

Are you perhaps hinting that the next stage for the dreaded T is a "walled garden" ?

Kind regards,

Nope

Just the severe lack of ISPCentrals per customer and how contended their pipes are.

Theres more info on BTw IPStream centrals here

I was only kidding about breaking rules....  :-[ :'(

I`m sure posting actual facts breaks their rules?

I do know from what I`ve read that any form of criticism is frowned upon & likely gets people banned...
