Hi, first post here but been browsing for a while.

Right, I seem to have a problem with my Broadband and I have no idea why.  Recently, maybe over the last month or so my broadband connection has been really poor.  I mainly use my internet just to browse the web, upload a few pictures but mainly used for playing over Xbox live.

Like I say, over the last month or so though my connection has been poor.  I mean really laggy and upload / download speeds are poor.  They were fine before, but just suddenly seemed to have dropped.  I haven’t changed anything, my equipment nor have I moved the router or messed with any wires or settings.

I’m wondering why this could be?  And what I can do to fix it.

Hi and welcome.

Which ISP do you use? And can you post a copy of your router stats? If you're not sure how to get the stats, have a look here.

Hi, thanks for the reply.  Im really rubbish with computers and technical stuff so be gently  ;D

Anyway, this is my router

    

Netgear DG834/ DG834G

    You need to have firmware at least v 1.05.

    From the web interface http://192.168.0.1
    > Router Status
    > "Show Statistics" Button

    alternatively click this link --> Show Statistics.

    Default username = admin, password = password
     

    Notes on the DG834(G).
    v1 and v2 are based on the TI (Texas Instruments) AR7 ADSL chipset.
    v3 is based on a different TI AR7 chipset and has different firmware.
    v4 has a broadcom chipset. As such firware versions are also different.

    New firmware released Feb 2007. - Bug fixes in DG834 and DG834G Release Version 3.01.31_UK/3.01.32 software, which cures the frequent drop outs. More info.

    Netgear owners may also be interested in a nice little tool called RouterStats for monitoring their SNR Margin.

What youv'e quoted tells you how to get the details for your individual line, which is what we need to see if you follow those intructions starting with :-
 http://192.168.0.1

Then your router should give you the information what we need :)

That is truly appalling.
BUT it could all be down to your own wiring, believe it or not.
Do you have a BT NTE5A master socket? If so can you connect to the Test Socket and post the resulting stats please.

There's something badly wrong with your connection. It's not likely to be anything to do with AOL; it's between you and the exchange. Your downstream connection speed is so low that you've either got a line fault, or a wiring fault, or your connection is subject to severe electrical interference.

The first thing to check is to reboot the router and see what the stats look like after that. It's just the last 4 lines which matter. If your router is compatible, then it's very helpful if you can install Routerstats to monitor your connection over time. There's some helpful information about troubleshooting here.

Right, what do you reckon i should do then mate?

I mean nothing has changed and it just randomly started going really slow.  Like i say, i haven't changed anything. 

Do you reckon i should speak to BT? Give them a call and see what they say.  Like i say all this technology means nothing to me  ;D  It's just the connection speed is really really frustrating me now.

To be honest mate, im not too sure, i think i've got AOL Gold.

Like i say, thing that has really got me is that it was fine a while ago.  Connection was great and my Xbox live connection was amazing.  What can i do to resolve this?
Another thing that annoys me is having to call AOL Helpline - Lets say difficult to undersatnd sometimes and usually gets you nowhere :(

As Roseway has advised you should try rebooting your router (just power off and back on) and post the stats back here.

Right, im at work at the moment, but i'l restart it tonight and repost the difference.  When i did the results above, i did it of my own pc in a seperate room, not the computer where my router is situation, does this matter?  GRRRR  :)

No, it makes no difference. What you are doing is reading data stored in the router.
