Abbreviations
« on: March 27, 2009, 06:31:29 PM »

Hi all

We all use abbreviations(and jargon) that we are familiar with . This can be confusing to people that are not so well versed with ADSL terminology (that's one  :) ). especially where there is  more than one interpretation. An example such as

FTP  : (foil screened twisted pair) or (File Transfer Protocol).

I know that we can find the answer  most times using Google . But the people who are looking for help are not always as knowledgeable.

Is it possible to have a library of these abbreviations (a bit like Computer Active jargon box )?

Regards Jeff :)

oh yes  ADSL   (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line )

You make a good point. It might also assist people in using correct abbreviations. We'll have a think about that.

Very good point & post.

My Sister, although very good at Texting, didn`t know what the following meant -

LOL _laughing out loud.

BBL - Be back later

BBS - Be back soon

There are others....

My Sis is 37, so She isn`t Old.

Its very easy to assume others "Know", which simply isn`t the case, i found it strange that She didn`t & equally couldn`t believe my Mrs`s didn`t know how to post on a forum...She`d been online for 3 years & never used a forum....Talked to loads of people on yahoo messenger, didn`t have a clue about forums.

I guess a lesson for all of us is don`t assume people will understand & allow time to try & explain, any member is able to do this it shouldn`t take a Staff member to help out a Newbie....Its very easy to ridicule someone & maybe even allienate a new member simply by replying with a funny quip, think first before replying.

I guess its a case of we all had "L" plates at one time, I always apply that principle everywhere I`ve Mod`d or am an Admin & when I`m out driving, I was there once, have patience & try to go back to where you/I was a while back. A gentle guiding hand can reap huge benefits for all, we might just have a specialist in something & future Admin.

I seem to remember some time ago I suggested about having a Glossary or Jargon Buster type page on the site and Kitz said she'd put it on the 'to do' list.

Yep a glossary is on the 'to do list'.

I've just been too lazy to do one yet :/

I don't think 'lazy' is the right word. :)

Careful Eric, or she might condemn you to the NC.

I was thinking, maybe a thread could be started for the forum members' suggestions for terms to add to a glossary.

It was meant to be a compliment. Kitz is anything but lazy.

lol - not enough hours in the day then :D

What I would ideally like to do is be able to implement some system on the forums where certain key words could be automatically linked to a glossary which could be clicked for the explanation.  However there doesnt seem to be an easy solution for this, although I have raised a query elsewhere to see if there is anything that could be integrated into SMF.

In the meantime - possibly the best solution would be to start a thread with terms and their explanations, which a separate post for each letter of the alphabet.

What I'll do is start compiling a list, and also open separate thread where suggestions for additions can be made.

OK Ive started something...  atm this is a bit rough as I will need to do proper formatting and it will be an ongoing piece of work.
Have to go out now - but will add more as and when I can.

Just on the off-chance that it got missed, did you look at the list on my link above?

If something like this was printed, then with the aid of the "Search" function it should bring you close to the relevent abbreviation.

I did try pasting that list, although it is quite long it needs the "Table function" to be used as it gets a little confusing in some places.

(But I don't know how to use the Table function)

I'm sure that there are many useful items in that list OF, and we'll keep an eye on it.
