monitoring line speed
« on: April 11, 2007, 05:41:28 PM »

I'm in my first ten days calibration on ADSL, and new from cable, so it's all a bit of a learning curve.  I've got an IP profile of 4000, but get 6500+ for the DSL rate most of the day.  In the morning at about 7am, it's down to 4200 or so, but a reboot takes it upto 6500+ again.

I saw on the kitz main site that kitz had somehow got hold of graphs to show the line speed, SNR etc.  One of the routers that the graphs were for was a DG834.

Does anyone know what this software is or how to get a record / graph of it?

Just want to see when this happens, and try to work out the pattern.  I think it might be that when the streetlight is on, it's so close to the line that it's making the rate drop - but I'd like to run a monitor for a day or so just to be sure....

Thanks for any help for a first timer here!

sorry, i should add that I've got a netgear dg834 v3 router from vodafone.

the info that it's giving me is:

DSL Link                         Downstream     Upstream
Connection Speed        6176 kbps               448 kbps
Line Attenuation            37 db                       10 db
Noise Margin                       4 db                   25 db

Is there anything odd about these numbers - they don't mean that much to me at all? I've seen these words mentioned in other posts, but just don't really understand whether a big number is good or bad for noise and attenuation, and I don't see where SNR fits with these numbers...

Thanks for your patience for a newbie!

Hi,
Welcome to the forum.
Try RouterStats here http://www.vwlowen.co.uk/internet/files.htm
I use it with a DG834v2 but the web site says it should work with v3 too.
Terry.
