DG834GT again
« on: April 05, 2007, 10:20:33 AM »

I can't resist buying new toys, and I recently got a DG834GT. Initially it was slightly disappointing, in that when it re-synced it didn't automatically re-establish the PPP session and I had to do this manually.

I got to hear about some unofficial enhanced firmware at http://dragonslight.altervista.org/ubergt/index.html and decided to give it a go. This firmware claims to have several advantages over the official version:

- Noise margin tweaks are saved, and survive a reset
- NAT loopback is supported
- Telnet access can be permanently enabled
- Seamless rate adaption is supported
- The web configuration is extended to include noise margin and other tweaking, so you don't have to use DMT or telnet

I found that this firmware works very well, and it did all the right things with no issues. More interestingly, it seems to support seamless rate adaption on my connection (ADSL Max) which is supposed to be an ADSL2+ feature. I installed the firmware yesterday at 8:00 am, and it synced at 7040 kbps. Some time during the night the speed came down to 5472 (which was expected) but the router stats and log show continuous uptime since 8:00 am yesterday.

Is this just false reporting by the router, or is SRA possible with ADSL Max?

Not 100% sure - but would have thought that reduction in sync speed needs a resync to trigger the lower value.

Have a nosey round the interface eric - I know you are knowledgable enough to know the difference between PPP and uptime..  but bearing in  mind that the DG834GT is loosely similar to the Voyager 2100 chipset.   I have 2 sets of "uptime"

One shows the time the router has been on (synced) for and the other just the PPP session time and its not always obvious which is which.
I'd show you an example from my router - but it wouldnt really help since they are both the same right now due to the leccy simply flicking the switch in the fuse box the other night and without them being different I can never recall which is which.

edit to add

ok I had to be very quick to do this and check it several times to  make sure it wasnt a difference of me just refreshing the page but Im sure its this way round because the 2nd figure is always around 5 seconds behind the first.

From the Broadband Line tab it shows
Line Up Time 02:15:08:52

From the Internet Connection tab it shows
Line Up Time 02:15:08:47

If you notice both are conviently called "Line Up Time"  ???

Yes I take your point about uptime. But the log hasn't recorded any re-sync event, and the telnet interface gives me this:

I'm not fooling myself - it's probably a misunderstanding or false reporting. But an intriguing little thought has occurred to me: if it really is changing speed without re-syncing then as far as DLM is concerned would my most recent sync be the 7040 one, with my IP profile being based on that after three days? I would end up with an IP profile which is higher than my current connection speed. :)

lol sorry dunno eric - does seem a bit weird.
Thinking logically the router has got to have lost sync in the first place to force the resync at a lower speed.
Doesnt make sense that the DLM would think out of the blue "Im going to sync erics line at a lower speed for the hell of it".

>> or false reporting

possibly

Exactly lol

You're probably right there. I'll watch with interest what happens over the next few days.

yep Ive noticed the same on my line stats I think this is not droping connection but once the crc errors or the snr reaches a certain levell it lowers the sync without dropping connection.  My ip profile has not dropped even though the sync has went from 5 somthing to 4 somthing over night then I tweaked the snyc back to 5 somthing during the morning.  Its never showed as a droped connection in the wan uptime.

Who knows interesting though
