Canon Pixma MP540
« on: March 04, 2009, 08:21:02 AM »

After much searching for a multi function printerI have narrowed my search down to this Canon model.
Does anyone have any pro's or con's about.
After reading many reviews and user comments,Canon seem to get better press than Epson?

It gets very good reviews, unkyUb as here, as an example.....http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/reviews/index.cfm?reviewid=108226

The only adverse comment seems to be that when doing photos it is not as quick as some others, a point that would not worry me at all. Results are more important than speed, and the results from this appear to be impressive.

I think Canon and Epson are pretty much like for like, and you would not be disappointed with either.

The decision probably comes down to cost of inks.

Thanks TD,speed is not too important as I don't print many pictures out now via my printer (I use Snapfish for bulk prints).
In the past I have always stuck to using genuine ink cartridges,so would probably still do so.Not sure how genuine Canon compare to genuine Epson ones.

Depending on how much printing you get out of the cartridges they look quite good price wise, about half the price of the ones for my Epson printer.

UB - thats the exact model that I have my eye on too. linky.

Ive just not been able to do anything about it yet as Ive had more urgent things to sort first... but I'd more or less decided that when I do get around to it and have the funds then thats the one I'll get.

I'd also researched the ink prices on it.. and seemed to be pretty reasonable from my local ink suppliers.

[edit]
Play.com keep seeming to change the pricing on it.. so I was also hoping that they would bring the price back down again

Just seen the Canon Pixma MP190 @ Ebuyer for £39.99.It comes witha £20 cash back offer which makes it £19.99 + delivery charges.(£5.82 is the cheapest option)
It seems to get a decent review as well.

Not the fastest printer in the world but for that money..............

I would be inclined to avoid that latest idea, the MP190, and stick witht he MP540 if funds will allow it.
As far as I can see, the MP190 has only two ink carts, one black and one with the three colours which is an expensive option ( run out of cyan when when the magenta and yellow are still full and you through them away.
The MP540 has the four tanks and lets you replace individual colours as and when needed.

If the funds can stretch, the MP540 is a much superior machine.

Thanks TD.Yes I must agree with you about the ink tanks. The MP540 is a better spec,I was just letting my wallet rule my head for a moment. ;D

Can't you do some sort of trade with your other half? For example, buy her a new vacuum cleaner and yourself a printer, so you've both got new toys to play with? A small bit of kindness like that is always worthwhile.
