Limited Unlimited.
« on: April 04, 2007, 08:38:46 PM »

One of my bugbears is ISPs that advertise "UnLimited" usage.

Ive already had a bit of a rant about this topic on my ISP caps page.

Quote
This practice is unfair for several reasons:

  • Hidden FUPs mean that users aren't easily able to compare packages across varies ISPs to find out which may be best for their own circumstances.
  • Unfair on Users. There have been many users who have signed up to what they thought were unlimited packages, only to soon find that their accounts have been heavily throttled. By which time its too late and they are locked into a 12 or 18 month contract.
  • Unfair on those ISPs who do try and lay out clear CAPs and FUPs. Since it puts them at an unfair disadvantage from selling their products in a market where many ISPs who are hiding FUPs. Too many users simply see the word unlimited and believe it.
However Ive today found out* that there is a government  E-petition to

Quote
Insist that OFCOM and the ASA stop Broadband Providers advertising 'unlimited' services that are in fact limited in the small print or by un-defined fair use policies.

Many ISP's (Internet Service providers) are advertising Broadband with 'Unlimited' downloads. The majority of these services are not unlimited as in the providers fair usage policies they either cap the use at a defioned amount, or use an undefined criteria that only they know.

The petition currently has circa 3500 signatures.  If you believe that the "Limited Unlimited" practice is unfair, please consider signing it and spreading the word.
