Tiscali - Slow download speed
« on: April 02, 2007, 11:25:16 PM »

My download speed has been getting slower and slower in the evenings, but my I.S.P (Tiscali) refuses to acknowledge the problem and blames B.T saying it is a line fault. B.T keeps responding to 'call out's' that Tiscali are booking, but they insist there is no fault on my line. B.T tell me that there is no LLU on my local exchange. below are the results of two speedtests that I ran at about 21.50 G.M.T. Does the big difference in download speeds mean that my slow download speed is caused by tiscali ?

The first speedtest was run from the speedtest@speedtest_domain  server   http://217.32.105.42/

The speed test has completed on test server test.speedtester.bt.com for user ***********   and you have downloaded a 1.7Mb file at a speed of
957 kilo bits per second (Kbps), your service bandwidth will have been quoted to you in kilo bits per second.

Your IP address is *** *** *** *** your browser is reported as being Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 and is running on Windows XP.
BT would regard the speed ranges shown below as normal service:
    For 250kbps End Users speeds between 50 - 250kbps.
    For 500kbps End Users speeds between 100 - 500kbps.
    For 1000kbps End Users speeds between 200 - 1000kbps.
    For 2000kbps End Users speeds between 400 - 2000kbps.

This test was run from  http://speedcheck.ispconnect.co.uk/  after logging back on to Tiscali, and is the only speedtest results that Tiscali will accept.

Your current bandwidth reading is:

209.20kbps

which means you can download at 26.15 KB/sec. from our servers.
28.8 kbps   dial-up

33.6 kbps   dial-up

53.3 kbps   dial-up

56 kbps   ISDN

128 kbps   ISDN

150 kbps   DSL

209.2 kbps   YOU

256 kbps   DSL

512 kbps   DSL

Hi Tigger,

Speed tests on their own don't tell you very much, because there are numerous possible reasons for low download speeds. What we need to do is narrow the number of possibilities.

First, does your modem/router provide connection stats (see http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.htm for more info)? If so, please copy them here.
Second, please run a BT speed test at http://speedtester.bt.com/ but be prepared for a slow response from it, and you may have to try several times before you get a result.
Third, it's a good idea to make sure that your own internal telephone wiring is optimised for ADSL quality. See http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/lowSNR.htm for some tips on this.
