Technical Details About The Innards Of A Router.
« on: March 28, 2007, 01:33:09 AM »

Hi. Does anyone know of any technical info on the workings of a router (not basic stuff), with details of which bit does what.

I've got some old ISDN and ASDL ones I'm playing with, has anyone got into the software ?. (Well it keeps me off the streets at night  ;D  )

Michael.

Once upon a time I saw some images hosted on a site - where someone had pulled one to bits, but where that was now for the life of me I cant recall Im afraid.  I know AG sometimes photo the insides of a router, but the ones I was thinking of was a bit more detailed than that.

Software - dont know much about that either mike - bit too techy for me.  IIRC Most routers are based on a linux shell and the firmware is written by the likes of askey and then the manufacturers edit things like the web interface.

Sorry not much help am I? :(

Most (if not all) routers are standalone computers running embedded Linux systems. If you do a bit of Googling you will soon find several geek sites where enthusiasts play around with unofficial firmwares and so on. I don't know whether any of this might be helpful.

Hi,Kitz and Eric.

I know it was a bit of a long shot, but thanks for replying . ;)
I want to try a Linux distro on them so I'm glad they use a type of Linux on them already.
I will try 'Google' any idea what these groups are called ?.

An example of the sort of site I was talking about is http://www.wi-fiplanet.com/tutorials/article.php/3562391
I used 'router firmware linux' (without the quotes) in the Google search.
