its not piracy software its windows genuine advantage , its a process that XP runs to validate your windows if need be ie when downloading certain programs or sevices from the windows website including certain updates.

it does however  have a floor and apparently can be compromised , but it does HAVE to run , just make sure you have a good firewall and you'll be fine.

oh and dont trust "the inquirer" its been the source of many a tale of windows woe ;) ;)

, but it does HAVE to run ,

Well if it does HAVE to run as you put it, mines been de-activated for a long, long time, and I like other people have suffered NO ill effects, except not telling MS how often I login.

No doubt your comments are well intentioned, but they are falling on a deaf ear here.

But it's still nice to hear other people views.

have you disabled the service or just the tray icon?

please do me very big favour and go here  http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=435bfce7-da2b-4a6a-afa4-f7f14e605a0d&displaylang=en

click the continue tab to go onto the validation process.............if it validates your copy of windows then trust me.......its NOT disabled

sorry if i come across a bit "short" sometimes , i dont mean to , im just a cheeky whippersnapper with a big gob ;)

peace

Well I did as you requested and windows wants me to "Install the validation tool" (no chance)

I have a genuine copy of XP and am able to run updates when-ever I like with no problems.

;)  one thing to be aware though , windows update does on occasion throw that validation tool into its critical updates , so if your adamant you dont want it then check em all before you download em.

do you have IE7? (you cant without the validation tool ((i dont think  :-[ )) )

windows as yet arnt allowed to use the validation tool for critical updates , but it is in the pipeline , maybe they will make it more secure first.

just out of interest , why are you so set against it? when basically its only gathering exactly the same info from your pc as is gatehered from the windows update site when its "checking if your system is running the latest version of windows update"  you do realise that dont you???

Thats one reason why I select my own updates.

I have had IE7 with no problem from windows etc.

Because it is then "MY CHOICE" and not that of some "Spyware's Choosing"
