Can I perhaps ask you a Q which you may (or may not) be able to answer, because its not really specific to PN/RIN

Since I moved web hosts, over the past couple of weeks theres been several times when the forum "white pages".  Ive contacted Vidahost about this and they say all is well and whilst I was on the phone to them one time and the site whitepaged they asked me to perform a tracert.

...   which showed that a particular hop was experiencing high latency.

If I'm quick enough each time the site white pages, and I perform a trace then the same hop would also appear to show high latency.   Its repeatedly the same hop.

Vidahost have been pretty good - I cant really fault them, and theyve rung me back a couple of times but since its not their network then I pressume its out of their control.

The site has just this min white paged again for me..  and sure enough once again the same hop breifly showed high latency.  This is what I got immediately after the white page ...

Hmm.  Does your host not use the peering supplied?  Or is it completely unrelated to them?

I suppose it depends on whether or not they pay that peering supplier for their services.  If they do, then it's Vidahosts responsibility, if not, then it's probably a best bet for you to contact them directly.

Or just come back home once the CCGI upgrade occurs.  The white paging is a bit annoying

They say unrelated- this seems to be smack bang in the middle of me leaving BT and going over to the hosts.  Its not their network (thermalthree), nor their routing via misp.co.uk

Problem seems to lie after we come off colossus > linx...  and in between verio.net and nnt.net.

Got used to the nice XPanel and own subdomain designation so I can now have http://forum.kitz.co.uk 
and also can you cope with my bandwith/hits usage

NTL/Virgin also gets this problem. It looks like the problem is with the step-off at the other side of the t'atlantic ocean.

I also get the whitepages occasionally. Smokeping shows that the problem is likely going to be worse 12-6 US time (1700-2300hrs) as below (if hotlinking image works):



I strongly suspect there is little your ISP or hosting provider will be able to do about this unless they have another data centre elsewhere.

Ive just removed a mod script from the forums that runs - just to make sure that it isnt the mod thats causing the errors.

Vidahost has been back in touch with me and they cant find anything at their end but have offered to move me to another data centre if the problem continues.

Continuing to monitor today.

All evening things have been really snappy and despite me deliberately trying to get a white page and hammering the forum, I havent been able to.

mumble mumble under breath - also been ok for me since I removed some code from the forum template which ran fine with my last hosts.

... which is basically a script which tells server info and load times.

It ran perfectly on the old ccgi server, but when I moved over to vidahost - they dont support the pasthru command for security reasons, so I was getting a lot of errors in the admin logs, so I simply commented out the line
//passthru ('uptime');

This morning I deleted the whole script so it doesnt give any server info at all... and since then things for me at least seem a lot better, although I dont see anything in the script which would cause such problems.

James has said its whitepaged for him once, and Im now hoping this was a one off.
About an hour ago I was hammering the forums, and chris had a small script running several thousand  lookups to try and see if we could stress out the site/server... but it coped fine.

I haven't had a white page since I changed browsers about 10 days ago, but I did sometimes get a longish delay on clicking a link. Now the site seems much more responsive, and I haven't had any delays this morning.
