BT Speedtester
« on: March 27, 2007, 10:19:28 AM »

I'd be interested in some of your thoughts if I may.

I've seen various instances of the BT Speedtester reporting faster speeds (throughput) than others over the last few months.  For example, around 3pm yesterday, my RIN (PlusNet) connection was reporting throughput of 5Mbps, whilst all other http sites were reporting 2-3Mbps.

Do people on other ISPs see this?  Does anyone have an explanation?  I'm just wondering if the BT Speedtester reports the maximum throughput gained during the test, rather than the average, which it claims to do and I'd imagine all other testers do.

That hasn't been my experience. I just ran the BT test, then immediately afterwards Namesco and PlusNet, and got these results:

BT: 4400
Namesco: 4452
PN: 4153

(My IP profile is 5000, and I'm with Zen)

I dont think Ive ever seen this occur James, if anything the BTw speedtest has always given me a slightly lower result, which Ive always assumed was due to the way it calculated overheads.

Ive just run a few tests in this order.

BBMax
Download Speed: 7070 kbps (883.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 716 kbps (89.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

BTw Speedtest
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 6919 kbps

adslguide
Speed Down 6889.50 Kbps

BBmax
Download Speed: 7064 kbps (883 KB/sec transfer rate)

BTW speedtest
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 6865 kbps

BBmax
Download Speed: 7070 kbps (883.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

Yet all of those speedtests recorded throughput in the region of 902KB/Sec on DUmeter.

Not really Im afraid unless there is some sort of congestion after your connection comes of the collusus PoP - or the peerpoint at which you connect.

iirc when you perform a speedtest you dont come off the collosus network, one of the speedtesters is at Manchester RAS and the other was either at Ilford or is it the PoP where BT have their big HQ now?

[edited to add]

217.35.209.142 appears to be at the Manchester RAS
217.32.105.42 is located at St Albans HQ and for me at least goes through their Ilford RAS

I generally use Namesco speedtester on my BT business broadband. It always used to show speeds of 6000+kbps. I had a three power cuts in short succession and my indicated speed dropped to around 4000kbps. I did the disconnect/reconnect thing for three days but my speeds did not improve, so I reperted it as a fault, assuming that my line profile had got stuck at the lower level.

I have just tried BT tester and it shows 6025, yet Namesco & ADSL guide still show speeds of 4000 or less.

This would seem to confirm James' observations.

Yeah, that's my concern.  Especially as BT will only accept speed faults when the BT Speedtester is being run!

Which ISP are you using Astral?

Would also seem to confirm a previous observation by you that the RIN network doesnt always play by the bRAS profile rules.

Wonder if it depends on which RAS?
