Are these line stats good
« on: March 26, 2007, 09:57:35 PM »

Not to sure what all this is about but is it any good for adsl max.  I am only getting 2.1 but used to get 4.1.  This is my results with pipex but ukonline llu say they can give me 6MB or close to it.  What do the stats look like to you pros

Thanks

Not fantastic.  Your attenuation (which is essentially the distance you are from the exchange) is okay, but the noise margin is rather high. It might help if you try changing filters and ensuring that you are connected to the master socket, or preferably the test socket behind the master faceplate.

What information do you get from running the BT Speedtest @ http://speedtester.bt.com ?

is it the downstream or the upstream snr that is high mate.  The bt speed thing comes back at 1Meg ip profile.  I think this is somthing to do with a fault I had on my line ever since I reported dropouts my connection has dropped is this because bt have raised the snr in my exchange.

What is the ideal snr to have (is it the 15db which is high)

The downstream figures are the more important ones.

It's possible that BT raised your SNR as part of the fault fixing process.  This may well reduce if your line remains stable and the IP Profile should pick up to 1.5Mbps.

If you do continue to see stability, it may be an idea to ask your ISP to raise a fault to BT asking for them to lower your target noise margin (default is 6dB).  I've had fairly good sucess with this in the past.

>> SNR Margin (Downstream/Upstream):  15/22

With adsl its mostly the downstream figures that we need concentrate on.

With max by default the Target SNR is 6dB,   but if your line has trouble maintaining stability then the DLM can change this.  Configurable options are 6,9,12 and 15dB.
Judging from your stats it looks possible that your Target SNR has been set at 15dB to keep your line stable.  This would tie in with the fact that at one point you could get 4.1Mb but now can only get 2.1Mb.  The higher your Target SNR then the lower the speeds at which you are going to sync to the exchange at.
Target SNR and SNR Margin although related are not the same thing.

You must have been having problems with stability at the higher speeds for the DLM to set your target SNR to 15dB.

If UKO are using adsl2+ then it may be able to squeeze a bit more out of your line than on max - but I seriously doubt whether it will be that much more.
You may find yourself in a similar position as to what happened on max - you start off high, but speeds have to be lowered with a higher target SNR to maintain stability.

The main benefit of LLU is that there is no IP profile to contend with, and you get more or less the speed you sync at (after allowing for overheads).

thanks guys if they have raised the snr target which I think they have how do I get them to lower this again as the dropouts where down to a faulty filter and usb modem.  Also will UKO reset my snr target on there LLU as they seem to think that they can give me 6MB

You can ask your ISP to send a request to the relevant supplier to get your noise margin dropped.

Yes you can - although DMT only works with some routers.
Make sure you get the right version for your router.
