d-link dsl-2640b latency problem
« on: January 31, 2009, 02:38:58 PM »

hey folks

I have recently bought a new router due to some problems I was having.

I am seeing something that I have never seen b4 coming from my first hop which is my ip from router to gateway. I have always see this as 1ms on my old router and on my old linksys router but with this d-link router it's as high as 10ms is this normal ???

Several routers show this characteristic; in fact some show as much as 99 ms. It's of no significance, and simply indicates that the router prioritises throughput at the expense of the ping response. The same applies to many internet servers which your data may pass through. The only figure which matters for latency is the end-to-end figure, not the figures for intermediate hops.
