How do I get rid of this annoying problem!!
« on: January 29, 2009, 10:24:28 PM »

Hi all,

I am getting a dialogue box popping up all the time which states

THIS ACTION CANNOT BE COMPLETED BECAUSE THE OTHER PROGRAM IS BUSY. CHOSSE 'SWITCH TO' TO ACTIVATE THE BUSY PROGRAM AND CORRECT THE PROBLEM

If I press 'Switch To' it opens up the Start panel. I'm just wondering if theres somethinbg seriously wrong with my machine. I've only just had it back from the repairers after they had to reload Windows XP Media due to a software problem and I don't want to have to go back to them again if I can solve this myself. Apart from this, the machine seems to be running normally.

Any suggestions greatfully received, but in plain English please as I'm not a techy by a long stretch!

Many thanks in advance

I'm not a Windows user, but that sounds like a virus to me. Have you got a virus checker installed?

Hi,

Yes, ive got Kaspersky 2009 installed and nothing has been picked up so I'm reasonably sure its not a virus

Have you tried opening "Windows Task Manager" (Alt + Ctrl + Delete) when the message box pops up to see what programs are open/running and is there any that you do not recognise?

Also, is there any particular program that you have open when the message pops up?

I think I may have identified what is causing the problem - but I have no idea why or how to cure it.

I think it may be something to do with HP Officejet software for some reason. I've uninstalled the offending item and it appears to have stopped! Now - any ideas what to do next chaps?

Possibly if you were to have a look in your firewall logs to see if anything is trying to connect to the net.
This error is very often associated with a server busy situation.

Hi all,

just to let you know, after a day of trial and error the problem WAS an HP software issue and I've had to reinstall everything again with patches and fixes as recommended by HP and, fingers crossed, it all works fine again!

Many thanks for your contributions

From around 1995, I have noticed a lot of reports of buggy HP printer software, and experienced many myself.  Maybe they are written by a third party developer and not really HP "supported".  In one company where I worked, the IT Manager banned HP printers totally because they were a support nightmare for him.  It's such a shame since they are invariably a good printer.
