As anyone used 'Snort' detection rules ?   http://www.snort.org
Is it necessary on Linux machine ?.
Would it be useful on web server.?

I've never used this sort of product, so I don't really have any useful comment. I rather doubt if there's much point on a desktop system sitting behind a firewall, but for a web server it may well be useful.
