How to make Adobe Reader 7.0 load faster
« on: February 22, 2007, 01:48:06 PM »

The thread heading should really of said "WOW, How to make Adobe Reader 7.0 load faster"

I just tried it, and bah gum it really does improve things tremendously. (it's like greased lightning)
However, please take note of the files relating to the search option (which is no big thing to correct) if you did not read the whole (small) article first, "like me"

http://blogs.msdn.com/jonathanh/archive/2004/12/22/330288.aspx

As you may of gathered I am well impressed with this little tweak as I use Adobe Reader quite a lot.

Seems to work with Adobe Reader 8.0 too when loading a document.
However can't find "Page Display tab: turn on “CoolType”" or "Startup tab: turn off “Show messages and automatically update”". In fact there's no Startup Tab.
Terry.

Maybe thats a difference between v7 and v8?

Or double check that you are looking in the right location.
At first I was just a "little" confused as to were to look for a couple of things, that turned out to be in sub menu's.

***********************
I just tried it myself with v8 on my other PC, and as you say there are some items that are missing.
However with doing as much as I could from the instructions for v7, it did speed it up as well.
(Must be all those "Add-ons)

Actually I think I prefer v7, it seems to be a little more straight forward, especially with the tool-bars.

Unless you need all the bells and whistles use an older version, 5.1 does everything most people need, then use Adobe Reader SpeedUp.

Even better - try Foxit Reader ~ > www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php.

Much faster, and only a 1.6Mb download.  Foxit does not spread rubbish all over your HD like Adobe.

<< Another biggthump for foxit

Its especially useful in places you can't install your own software, as the executable file will run quite happily from a flash drive without installation :D

Thanks Dave,

I have also since tried Foxit Reader, as suggested above, and thats very good also, especially if all you want to use it for is to read documents.
And over 100 MB smaller.
