Thomson Speedtouch V585 V6sl Modem

Hello, I wonder if anyone can assist with this?
I recently bought a speedtouch V585 V6sl modem off ebay- I think it was an ex AOL one. I have installed this replacing my Netgear one and got and increase in speed. I am at the end of a long line and get download speeds of around 1- 1.3 meg. I used the DMT tool on the netgear, but trying the correct DMT tool on the speedtouch, the experimental tab is grayed out.  I know this is to do with the firmware version ( 6.2), but there seems to be no way of downgrading this to the earlier firmware so I can tweak the line SNR etc. Is this because it is an AOL unit?

Hi, the ex-AOL routers can be tricky to flash and may need a little patience.

It may help if you read through tarka's thread here where he eventually managed to sucessfully flash one.

The firmware version that fully supports the DMT tool is v6.1.4.3 which seems exceedingly hard to get hold of, but a copy of the firmware that tarka used is available from.

It is possible but it requires some soldering and the construction of a JTAG cable.  Here's a link if you fancy doing it, if not just keep an eye on ebay and get yourself an unlocked one from there.

Having spent a couple of days on & off fighting to flash an AOL firmware out of a V585 V6 I gave up and passed it on to a mate who's with AOL.

Unfortunately, the AOL router boot code is locked down blocking firmware downgrades along with a number of other useful commands.  I am not sure that changing the firmware can be achieved without a JTAG (which is a way OTT exercise in my view).  There are arguably better (more reliable and perhaps more stable) DSL modems out there that made me drop this as a bad job and get a 2WIRE 2700HGV off ebay.  It got me higher sync speeds and reduced/eliminated resyncs.  YMMV.
