The officers would use maps to navigate to their destination , the name of which is related to trees ,bark and a place on the coast.

Bark as you noted has several meanings, we are loosley looking at the use of two.

"A bark" is a ship , navigate means to sail to a place , so we are coming to our destination from the sea.

Bark is also connected to the name of our destination, bark comes from trees which grow in and give us .........

Trees come from saplings or acorns and a number of things.

Maybe I'm going barking mad, but I will have a go with ................. Woods Moor, Cheshire. $:-\$

Trees come from woods, reaching the end of a sea voyage you would moor at the quay side.

A coastal feature could be ................. Head ......................
Putting it all together ......................... Woodland Head, Devon might be the place?
