PlusNet Change
« on: February 11, 2007, 08:17:50 PM »

Just swapped from BB+ to PAYG, but still on 2 Meg.

Same price but much more consistant speed, around 1.96 1.97 Meg.

Odd, but it seems much faster than BB+, web page loading is much quicker.  I can't believe that this is just a placebo effect.

It may not be a placebo effect. I've got BB+ and also a BT Business connection. BB+ has been down to dial-up speed a lot of the time. I know it's not entirely down to local exchange contention because my BT line is OK. I suspect PAYG is not so throttled as BB+, which is why you are getting more consistent speeds.

I had the same problem with BB+, which is why I switched.  3 evenings of around 100K, then back to normal for 24 hours, then back to about 300K.

Just run a DSLZone test ~ 1995.  Not bad for a 2mb connection.

Sorry musta missed this earlier  :(

I do believe that BB+ is not running as it should - bit out of touch with all thats been going on in the PN world of late Im afraid.

Because customers Pay per GB on PAYG their traffic gets priority and there is supposed to be very little shaping on any protocols. Http should get full wack.
BB+ http should also get full speed, but there have been a fair few complaints that its currently not doing if you use more than xGB.

PN are running short on capacity right now.. and Im hoping that things will get better when they install a new central due at the end of the month.

If you use less than 2GB per month then its certainly worth changing to PAYG - cause PAYG with 2GB included is the same price as BB+... and its free to swap over.

I'm sure I could survive on 2GB, but every teenager needs at least that per week to live a happy life. It's a shame that parents do not seem to grasp this concept & shell out twice as much money every month to ensure their little darlings' human rights.  ;)

There are plenty of people who want to download hundreds of GB a month. There was a considerable fuss on the Zen forum just before Christmas, when Zen gave notice that their legacy 1 and 2 Mbit services would be subject to a 100 Mbytes a month download cap. Some people are actually migrating away because of this. Personally I find it incredible, but what does an old fuddy-duddy like me know about anything?

Addition of new Central Capacity & Broadband Plus refund scheme
Other
Posted on: Friday 23 February 2007, 15:48
We are pleased to advise that we have now activated two additional 155Mbps segments of BT Central capacity. This new capacity will solve the shortage of sessions which was causing connectivity issues for USB modem users at peak times. Please see the earlier Service Status notice for more information on this.
http://usertools.plus.net/status/archive/1170428858.htm

This new pipe will be known as THN-AG1. For those interested in which pipe they are connected to, this can be found out by visiting:
http://usertools.plus.net/@gateway

Lighting the additional bandwidth will also resolve the slow speeds experienced at peak times for Broadband Plus customers. Please see the earlier Service Status notice for more information on this.
http://usertools.plus.net/status/archive/1171308198.htm

Why were there peak time slow-downs for Plus customers in February?

- Based on how we design our products Broadband Plus pays for approximately an 18% share of our network at peak times and during December and January was using up to 25% which was impacting Premier & PAYG customers.
- We re-balanced our platform and updated our automated rules at the beginning of February to ensure that Plus got ~18% at peak times which solved the Premier & PAYG gold drops but caused slower than acceptable speeds for some Plus customers.
- Using new capacity that comes online today we will increase the per-customer capacity for Broadband Plus and therefore choose to make a lower profit margin on Broadband Plus until May 2008 when the new BT Wholesale Broadband Connect pricing is planned to be available.

We will be contacting a number of Broadband Plus customers, offering a refund of February's subscription fee for the inconveniences that they have suffered as a result of the problems described above.

We will be offering this refund to customers using the following criteria:

- You must be a Broadband Plus customer (option 1, 2 or 3) provided via BT IPStream or Tiscali LLU.
- Customers must have not used more than 4GB at peak in in their last three billing months on Plus Option 1, 7GB on Plus Option 2 and 11GB on Plus Option 3.
- Must be able to show evidence of speeds problems encountered, see below on how to claim your refund
- If you upgraded to PAYG or Premier in February due to slow speeds and meet other criteria you are eligible.

How to claim your refund:

- We will be contacting Broadband Plus customers who raised a speed fault ticket during February to advise them of the refund.
- Customers who we do not proactively contact (for example those who have been affected and have posted in forums but not raised tickets) can still claim a refund provided they meet the criteria by using this Help Assistant path http://www.plus.net/go.html/plusrefund
- The ticket raised should contain a previous ticket number where you have raised an issue about slow peak time speeds. Alternatively, supply a web address or screen-grab to a speed test such from the PlusNet Speedtest, ThinkBroadband, Speedtest.net or BBMax showing a speed of less than 25% of your line profile speed as assigned by BT between 1st and 22nd February. You can find out your line rate in Connection Settings in Member Centre https://portal.plus.net/my.html?action=data_transfer_speed
- Customers will need to claim by 16th March 2007 to be eligible for the refund of February subscription.

Felis - I think you are eligible to claim, because you changed products due to poor speeds.

Astral - depends on your peaktime product usage.

Even if you havent raised tickets you may come under this category

"(for example those who have been affected and have posted in forums but not raised tickets) "
Hopefully your posts in these forums may provide the proof they want - no promises but I may be able to give them a prod if you are under the limit.

Hi Guys,

Kitz let me know that there were a few posts about BB+ in here.

On the account that you can supply evidence of your poor speeds and your peak time usage hasn't been above 4GB in the last 3 months then you should be eligible.  These refunds will be done on a case by case basis, and even if the evidence that you have is in here, then I don't foresee that being a problem.

Regards,
James

Thanks for the info.  I only have one piece of evidence which is a single test at DSLZone UK which shows a very slow speed, but in January.

I raised no tickets, reasoning that evidence from the Plusnet forum showed it was their problem not mine, and so just switched to PAYG which is working like a charm.

I could ferret around a bit but it would cost me more than the offered refund so I probably won't bother.

Thanks for the thought though.
