The dongle mentioned earlier is the flash drive referred to above.
Can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong?

I think you are making it more complicated than it needs to be.

Yes I have done everything suggested as follows:-

You will have to set the printer to shared from its properties on the desktop.  - Done OK

You may also have to install the drivers on the laptop as well as the desktop. - Done

Once you have it shared, turn off all firewalls on both machines. - Done

1. Go to the laptop and Printers and Faxes - Done

2. Select add a printer NEXT> - Done

3. Select A network printer NEXT> - Done
4. Select Browse for printer NEXT> No!

This is where it goes pear shaped. I get no printers offered and typing in the Printer name results in a 'bong' on the computer who tells me it doesn't no what I'm talking about: - and it's is probably right!!!


5. Select the printer NEXT> - Nothing is offered for selection.
It was then I resorted to the networking wizard but drew a blank there too.
I've offered the machines all the drivers relating to my Printer and Windows XP on the Epson CD but to no avail.

The low tech option of just switching flash drives between the two is looking more attractive each day.

You may need to change the access rights to the printer add Everyone.



Select everyone and tick all the allow boxes.

See if you can see printer this way:

On the computer that you want to remotely administer the printer from (Laptop), click Start, click Run, type \\IP OF DESKTOP MACHINE, in the Open box, and then click OK.

Just to confirm both computer are on the same Workgroup?

Right click "my computer"/properties/computer name

Just to wind up this thread with a word of appreciation. Thanks! The problem is solved at last: or that is what I hope. I tried everything suggested in the post above and it all came to naught. So I bit the bullet and signed up for the BT Broadband 0800 help line and made over both my computers to their technician for about 4 hours over two days. I don't know what they did and I rather suspect the three BT guys at the other end were struggling. Anyhow, I can now print wirelessly from the lap and swap a file or two between the machines. Long may it last. Thanks again for all the suggestions.
