I brought a new toy today?
« on: November 30, 2008, 10:45:20 PM »

I know it's a bit outdated now, but when I was in Aldi yesterday they still had some of these "Remote Controlled Wall Sockets" £12.99 so I decided to treat myself.

If I was to say that I'm going back tomorrow for another set, would that then mean I am well pleased with them?

Well "I'm going back tomorrow for another set"

Hey, I hadn't noticed those, but they look very handy indeed. I've got a couple of sockets in rather inaccessible places, and remote switching would solve a small problem. Thanks for the hint.

They were from the Sunday 16th November newsletter, but my local store (Birmingham Newtown) still has plenty in stock.

Now reduced because of the VAT reduction. (now £12.59)

If anyone can't find them locally, then just ask the manager to get some sent from there.
Just going out now for a second set.

*************
And a couple of these, http://thepcbusiness.com/Trust_PW-4080T_800VA_UPS_Energy_Protecto_406540.html
Previously I had 2 Belkin ones but one has packed-up (possibly only the battery) but they were second-hand to start with so decided to replace both of them. (Christmas present to myself)
Also have decided to have 2, sooner than one big one, then if one stops working it's only half the cost.

*********************************
edit:
Well I got one UPS, have to pick up the other one tomorrow.
However, I decided to try the battery out of my still working Belkin 325vh UPS in the 625vh UPS
It turned out it was only the battery that had stopped working, must admit I thought it was somehow because it had a slight bulge on the side (overheated)
New battery = £10

(So much for cutting down on the old lecky consumption)
All I need now is some a power cut to make it seem justified.

Handy are those.

I purchased them the last time they were in Aldi. Use them behind the TV so that I can only have the Sky on and nothing else.

Its all about energy efficiency nowadays!

Its all about energy efficiency nowadays!

I don't look at it that way, but more from the point of view of making the appliance last longer.

For every hour that my new TV is in standby mode (there is no actual off mode, except the wall socket which is awkward to get at) is another hour/day/week/month or year taken of the life of the product making it that much longer before having to either have it repaired or replaced.

They sell very well this time of the year.

Great for turning off the Xmas tree lights where the socket is right behind the tree.

Since every one of these effectively uses electricity as they are permanently on you could end up using more electricity than some of the new devices with low power standby especially if you use loads of these....   :P

Pah! I went to Aldi this morning and they've sold out of the remote control sockets and told me they wouldn't be able to get any more in. >:(
