Wine
« on: November 28, 2008, 03:47:03 PM »

I wonder if I could ask our resident wine imbiber - would I be correct in thinking that a wine with botrytis in the title is a very sweet wine. I ask because the sweeter the better for me, and I'm a complete moron with regards to wine types. Just doing a Tesco order and spotted a bottle of Botrytis Semillon. Thanks

I don't know if I'm THE resident wine imbiber, but I'm one of them :)

Botrytis is a disease of grapes which can be very destructive, but some years it causes the grapes to shrivel and dry so that their sugar content is exceptionally high. In these conditions it's known as the 'noble rot', and dessert wines produced from such grapes are of extra high quality and natural sweetness. Botrytis Semillon is one of these, so I would say go for it.

Sorry wandered off - as you do - my usual tipple on the rare occasion that I do drink is Cinzano Bianco with lemonade, see told you I was a moron, which is very sweet and I'm looking for something like that, to be honest so called sweet wines have in the past proved disappointing. Still doing the order so I may just order a bottle (I love tabbed browsing).

Thing to remember about dessert wines is a lot of them come in smaller bottles,37.5cl and 50cl.
There are some very good sweet german wines on the market.

For that special occasion (Winning the lottery)

On the back label of some bottles (especially Victoria Wines shops) there may be a number form 1 to 5.
No 1 being a "very sweet" wine and No 5 being the driest wine there is.
