Changing IP address speeds up my connection
« on: November 22, 2008, 06:54:15 PM »

I find that if I'm getting a poor connection, and then disconnect and reconnect the router, a new IP address is assigned and the speed goes back to its maximum.
Searching on the web seems to say that normally an IP address is assigned for 7 days, so its seems a bit strange.
Does anyone know whats going on?  And is it possible to keep changing the IP address automatically?

BTW, its a DG834G router, and I'm with AOL/TalkTalk.

I rather doubt if the improvement is anything to do with the assigned IP address. It's far more likely to be that the reconnection gets you connected to a different central pipe which is less congested than the one you were connected to.

I doubt if it's connected in any way; you're barking up totally the wrong tree.

More likely you're getting interference that's forcing your router to resync at a lower speed.
Then when you reconnect the interference is no longer there....

Think in terms of trying to identify what else is going on when you get poor speeds.

Also, how are you measuring "speed"?

Its highly unlikely anything to do with the IP address.

Is it your sync speed or actual throughput that goes up.

If its sync - then this is negotiated before the IP address is even assigned.  If its throughput, then most likely you have been assigned a different ISP central and one that is less congested.

AOL/TT use dynamic IPs, which mean that your IP address comes from a pool and is only leased to you for the length of your connection time.   Rebooting the routing will get a new connection with your ISP and therefore most likely a new IP address.

Yes I do this regular with Tiscali . when DL speed drops I disconnect from Tiscali NOT my connection. The reconnect to tiscali and with luck sometimes get a good or at least better DL speed . The IP address does change that is expected . If you run something like pingplotter you will see that sometines  when  you reconnect there is a different route to the ISP , if your lucky then one of them is NOT so congested . Generally I have noticed that when there are problems you can see large latency and errors and lost packets along the route .

Sync speed is always constant at :-
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8128 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 21 db 5 db
Noise Margin 0 db 24 db

I've been using thinkbroadband speedtest and tools, their speedtest very much depends on which port is selected.  Am I correct in thinking this is due to AOLs traffic shaping?

So its not the IP address thats important its just reconnecting to a different pipe?  Is this normal?  It seems a bit of a nuisance having to faff about with the router.  Perhaps I'm worrying too much, as long as I can watch iplayer all night without interruption its alright.

if your download speed does not drop too much then don't worry  :) unless it stops you doing your thing ! then complain to ISP >:D

If you get slower speeds when using their standard port 8095 than you do with port 80 - then yes.

Unfortunately on some ISPs it is fairly well known.

It seems a bit of a nuisance having to faff about with the router.

Some routers have a reconnect PPP session in their web interface, which just reconnects to the ISP, rather than having to perform a full resync, and is much quicker to perform.
This is what jeff means when he says he 'disconnects from Tiscali NOT my connection.'

Yes, well spotted Rahat. 0dB of SNR margin is gonna slow you down too, so it might not even be totally to do with traffic shaping. Perhaps your SNR is going down a bit low, and you might have to make do with a slightly lower sync speed in order to get more consistent speeds.

I used to have similar problems, basically errors are building up because your SNR Margin is so low...

Are you on LLU?

As Chris said, that low snr is definately the issue that you have. Are you connecting via an extension?

Noise margin is about 6 or 7 dB at the moment.  I was getting rubbish connection but reconnecting sorted it again.  Noise margin didn't change, but I'll keep an eye on it to see how much it fluctuates.

I think what is happening is this evening you will find the SNR drops to 0dB again and then errors rack up causing slow throughput, you then resync and all is well as the SNR has recovered on that resync.
