USB ADSL modem and Vista
« on: November 21, 2008, 12:11:49 PM »

Well, today I got a surprise.  ???
I saw a Dell PC running Vista connected to BT broadband with an Alcatel speedtouch (silver frog) USB ADSL modem!  :o

Now I'd always heard that this wasn't possible, but it seems to work fine.

It was on a fixed-rate 2mbps line, but I don't think that's relevant.
There are 2 PC's in the house (the other is XP) both with the same model USB ADSL modem, so they have to decide who is connected at any particular time. A router (and some ethernet cable) is on the agenda though.

When vista first came out there was a problem, but Speedtouch soon became aware of this wrote some new drivers which worked with Vista.
At first you had to actively search and download them from the Thomson site, but gradually over the past couple of years, more ISPs have been sending out CDs which will automatically install the correct drivers when it detects Vista as the o/s.

In reality the 'lil frog' is actually not too bad and Ive seen it out perform certain router makes on some long lines.

Memo to self - do keep up!  :D

On the other hand I do hate the drivers and other complication that those USB devices introduce. A router is so much better.

I am setting up a new pc with vista . When I used the tiscali vista compatible disk to install the st330 it failed !to connect to the isp.Tiscali were of no help. I eventually found a working solution on the web . with a vista compatible download and full install instructions .
 :)
I will see if I can find it again.

Thanks jeffbb,

I've still got an old Tiscali 330 lying around so I've downloaded the drivers and extracted them to a CD to go with it.
Hopefully I'll never need it myself, but it might be an emergency backup for someone.  ;)

Interesting link jeff..
I normally carry a link for the ST330 drivers on the frogstats page.

One thing I notice is that the link is is 12.9MB where as the Thompson ones are 10.4MB.   Ive had a quick look at the file - it could be that the Thompson ones are packaged and compressed hence the smaller file size...  or...
I notice that that file has something called \ST330_vista\ST330\diagnostics

Since I dont have a ST330 to hand, do you know if that file is the infamous DrST replacement for the vista config by any chance?
I know you kindly sent me the original DrSt for XP.. but thats approx 10MB. so was wondering what that diagnostics folder does.

The Diagnostics folder appears to have a Thomson Belgium program (dated 16/11/2005) that gives you status information about the link, modem, system etc. No need to install, you just run it. I just ran it on an XP system (with no drivers installed or modem attached). It has 5 tabs - general, ADSL, USB, Advanced & Version.

that gives you status information about the link,

Excellent - so hopefully it gives the full line stats :)

HI
It is NOT the same as DR Speedtouch just a close relation ??? .It just displays a diagnostic window  see attachment. Each tab has the errors and transmission info . Dr speedtouch grabs this info and sends it to a folder . Sorry its not color but file was too large .
Jeff :)

Kitz
Nope not really any use when you have problems ,thats why you need dr speedtouch. But even that is limited use as you only get informatin when you send data to folder . You cannot get any history . That is why I want to change to a router asap. My snrm is going up ? and its not clear why.
