POP (point of presance)
« on: January 31, 2007, 11:54:32 AM »

Hi guys,

As we know it is possible for 2 people who relatively live close to each other to connect 2 different POPs, what is the best way to determine which POP you are connected to?

Im investigating a possible POP outage, im also trying to find a ADSL POP SITE, but seem to getting nowhere? anyone know if any exist?

Best Rgds

I'm wondering by this if you mean VPs (Virtual Paths at the exchange.

VPs are related to the DSLAM.
Each dslam at the exchange will have several VPs.

Your exchange will also have several dslams.

ATM backhaul routing for all the (IPStream) customers on the same dslam should take the same ATM routing regardless of being on different VPs.  (By that I mean all go through the same RAS), although some of the VPs may be more congested than others.

Different dslams at the same exchange may have different ATM backhaul routing - ie one dslam may go through Manchester RAS, another may go through Kingston RAS.

There isnt any we can determine which VP or which dslam we are connected to at the exchange.
It is sometimes possible to find out which RAS you are connected to though.
How to find out which RAS you connect to.
Ignore the top bit - the info on AG is now outdated and theres too many variables for that method to now be accurate.

Best places to find info about BT outages are

BT Service Status reports
BT MSO's.

FYI On the MSO status reports, MUX then a Number is a dslam at the exchange.

Theres no where that I know of that lists PoPs - theres too many throughout the UK.
I dont even think theres anywhere that lists info on RAS's either...  the only way I knew about the new RAS details that were added to my site, was by noticing the information on the MSO reports over time.
