have a question about my phone
« on: November 19, 2008, 07:41:16 PM »

Hi  guys

I am living in uni halls and my phone plugs into the Ethernet port on the wall, next to this is the one for the internet connection. I am just wondering how this method of phone using lan cable is using i.e. whats systems are involed, name of technology blah blah, just generally interested. No phone on site can dial an outside line.

thanks

Gregg

Nothing clever, just plug adapters.
Lan cable has 8 cores, phone only uses 2 or 3 of them.

Just a thought as my school uses ethernet to rj11 converters...

VOIP is expensive.
Gets used in some offices where it makes moving desks around somewhat easier.
You would know if you had a VOIP phone.

Well there isn't any VoIP phones in school but my local HSBC branch use IP Phones so I suppose they use VoIP.

And 100meg Fibre broadband! BT Openreach engineer worked on it that came to look at my line a while back.
