If you don't have automatic updates configured then it's time to do this one.

Like you Rizla I stayed with version 2 because of the add-ons problems. However I think most of them have been fixed now and I'll have to update.  One of the other objections I have is that in 2 the active tab is indicated with a red x in the corner, in 3 it seems not very well marked. I've looked for a different "skin" but not found one. Has anyone here had the same problem and did they fix it?

I'm using FF3, and the active tab is shown by a red cross in the corner. :D

Although I suppose I'd better admit that I'm using the Firefox 2 theme (you'll find it on the FF addons site).

I'm using FF3 with the standard skin, and I get the red X OK.

Using FF 3.0.4 here and no probs with the red x active tab.

Must admit though I did like the previous skin I had, which unfort doesnt work with v3 :(

Just on the off-chance for anyone still using v2.x

Quote

Mozilla's developers urge those left behind on the Firefox 2.x release to upgrade to Firefox 3.x, warning that it will stop issuing stability and security patches for the older release next month.

I'll be trying this later today as I'm still having my problems even with IE7

Just a quick update, I have downloaded FF3 latest version and I have the red active x too. Don't know what happened before, finger trouble, I expect! And all my addons are working too.

I use Firefox v3 and have the Aeon Clouds theme as it is much easier on the eyes.
The tabs have a radio button to close them and the active tab's button changes to orange.
Try it from here:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/870

Customize it to use small icons and it look s fine.

Try the Tab Mix Plus add-on: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1122

It has a host of features which include choose if you want the close on each tab, if it is to appear on the left or right. I particularly like the ability to click a gap on the tab bar and reopen a tab I've closed by mistake!

This is the one add-on I could not be without!
