I tried to install fallout 3 today and my dvd drive can not pick it up, i tried another game which i had installed a couple of days ago and it does not work either. I looked in device manager and all is fine there and in the property's of the device it says all is fine as well so i am stumped

Try cleaning the drive with a lens cleaner disk - if that doesn't work I'd say the drive is crackered.

I find the most reliable way of testing optical drives is to make sure the BIOS boot order is DVD first, get an OS disk (bootable) and see if the machine will boot from it.

This way you can discount the OS from the equation.

If it dont boot and the BIOS is set correctly, and the disk is definately bootable then the only thing left to check is the IDE/SATA cables/ports.

Failing that, the drive is dead.

ok I could not use the link oldfogy provided as I run vista 64 but thanks.

I went into the Bios to make sure DVD-rom was the 1st boot option then tried to boot using the windows vista cd and it never booted so I will check the cables and get a lens cleaner and see if that can fix it

This compnay will start to hate me, my comp is only a few months old as some of you will know from my other thread, they just sent me a new HD which is working fine and now the DVD might have gone
