Sunday 9th Chat
« on: November 09, 2008, 07:37:22 AM »

Morning all,

Looks like a crisp bright morning here at the moment, I hope it stays that way for the Remembrance parades today taking place all over the country.  Please remember the two minutes silence at 11 a.m.

Have a nice day whatever you're doing.

Chrissie

Morning.

Wild, windy and wet today..........not nice.

TD will be at the Remeberance Parade today at the village War Memorial, dressed in his bowler hat and with his furled umbrella and his few medals polished.
There are not too many names on our Memorial.........the village does have only about four hundred souls.......but one group always catches the eye, a father and three sons all lost in action.

Have a good day whatever comes round.  :)

Remembrance services are held here on the 11th November  in  every village and town.   We shall be at our village memorial on Tuesday when the names of all those on the memorial will be read out.  The wreaths laid are not of poppies, but of blue cornflowers ( Bleuets) , both of which grew as weeds in the battle torn wheat fields of France and Belgium.

(It was in 1916 that two Frenchwomen, a nurse Mme Lenhardt, and the daughter of the governor of Les Invalides, deeply moved by the terrible wounds of the soldiers in the war then in full course, decided to make artificial bleuets and sell them to raise funds. The flower recalled the colour of the uniform of the first French soldiers, which was (almost unbelievable now) blue. They were called ‘les bleuets’. And ever since the Revolution, blue has been considered the national colour. After World War II millions were sold each year by the organisation Le Bleuet de France to raise funds not only just before Armistice day (November 11) but also on May 8 (end of WWII in Europe).  )

It's quite moving that one of the abiding memories of that terrible time is the beauty of poppies and cornflowers.

Prince Edward was in the Royal Marines for a short time, but he couldn't hack it and went off work for Andrew Lloyd-Webber instead.

I don't know if anyone has read the book, (I believe there is now a  London Theatre production)   War Horse by Michael Morpurgo   "an incredibly moving story about one horse's experience in the deadly chaos of the first world war. In 1914, Joey, a young farm horse, is sold to the army and thrust into the midst of the war on the Western Front. With his officer, he charges towards the enemy, witnessing the horror of the front-line. But even in the desolation of the trenches, Joey's courage touches the soldiers around him"

It is classed as a children's book but I am sure some of you would enjoy it.

It was right cold out there today..........TD is glad to be back in front of the fire.

Lovely poppy pic, UnkyUb.

I seem to remember reading some time ago that the cornflower was the first thing to be seen growing again at Hiroshima after the bomb.
Sometimes I think that nature loves to show some contempt for homo sapiens by bouncing back and flourishing despite whatever destruction man inflicts on her.
