Seems strange that you can access them on a vista PC and not on an XP machine - something like that could normally perhaps point to an MTU issue, but iirc youre on cable which doesnt seem to suffer MTU problems as much as adsl. - nor are any of those sites blocking ICMP which makes it highly unlikely it is an MTU problem.

What happens if you try performing a tracert on demonsden.com

Floyd
Thanks for the info, not promising but will take a look at it later.
But as it's only these 2 sites, I don't want to start loading more software. (Hope you understand)

Kitz.
I have done the tracert, but it means nothing to me, although I have posted the results here and also tried to interpret them from your link, (I'm thick) please don't go to too much trouble as I'm sure the problem will resolve itself at some stage, especially as it's not just me.

OF, it actually doesn't involve installing anything, all you are doing is re-configuring your DNS client.

hmm   just wanted to make sure you could actually route ok to the demonsnet server.. which you can.
Theres nothing in there which implies any problems at all with data packets traversing between you and their server.   The time is very acceptable too.

Judging from that trace it should all be working ok.

I though DNS was just an abbreviation for "Do Not Swear". (Sorry only joking) but it's way over my PC knowledge, so will stay with what I can understand (Teaching an Old Dog new tricks etc)

Kitz.
Thanks for that, I tried it again a few minutes ago and still no joy.
As with my previous comment (post) and also the one here above to Floyd, hopefully it will sort itself out soon.
So until then, I thank you all for the input, but will have to drop it for now and wait and see what happens.

lol - Im laughing here....  because Im sure floydy said something very similar when I first told him about OpenDNS.

It really is very easy...  as Floydy will now testify to.   I think he was amazed that such a simple thing could make such a big difference to his connection.

Though TBH OF, although I thought it was the problem for Floydy, I dont think it is with yours because your lookup on the trace you did was fine.

If you don't mind I would like to come back to this DNS settings, mainly because even in general for a long time I don't think some pages open anywhere near as fast as they should or possibly use to.
Actually things seem worse since being upgraded to 10Mb.

Obviously I'll take a look around the site first, but it's not going to be for a couple of days.

Just a update on this problem. I just managed to get onto the site and found the following post.

Quote
As many of you know, the forum has had up and down performance issues for a little over a week. The host has had some internal network problems.
I have been in daily contact with the support staff to remedy this slowdown. They are very aware of the problem and working on a permanent solution.
It has been an aggravation to everyone I am sure, it certainly has been to me.
I ask everyone to remain patient as they repair this problem. It does not just affect this forum, but several thousand websites. The support staff has been courteous and has remained in constant contact with me every day, and I am sure it will be resolved soon.
Thank you for understanding.

edit - Update: 11 Nov 2008

Unfortunately this problem seems be be getting worse.
The number of sites not being able to connect too has now even extended to VNU (although the CA site is ok) and also Mgmcc site is a no no too.

I know at least 2 people from those sites comes onto here (KA, & Dave).
So thats the reason for not replying to any posts.

Phil,
I've just been onto Mike's site using FF3 and also the VNU site which I normally use instead of CA and both open fine.

Just checking using IE 7

Edit.
All 3, CA & VNU and Mike's all opened OK in IE7

Using XP Pro with SP3.

Cannot think of what to suggest.
Sorry Phil.

When I did briefly manage to get onto The demons den, this message was also on there.

.... It does not just affect this forum, but several thousand websites.

But since then it has got worse.
I normally access through VNU, but tried CA out of curiosity and found that one worked.

I've tried most things that I can think of with my PC's (XP SP2 & 3 IE6, Vista IE7)
So don't know what to do except watch more TV (which is doing my head in)
Although I'm going to try disabling my router firewall AND PC firewall to see if that helps.

Failing that, I intend to contact VM to see if they have any idea's because also when trying a speed test earlier this evening, my DL speed is only half what it should be.

PM received, thanks.

Tried VNU again and that's now opening, but none of the others.

Even tried disabling the firewalls (router etc) but still no good either.
I think it's time just to play a waiting game. :comp:

Yes, on the Cdcovers site.
The other site/s just eventually time out with the usual "Page not found" message.

I have had problems with one site in the past, and I fixed it by resetting my router.

Common factors are:

Your router
Your ISP's server/proxy
Your broadband line
The web sites involved (although this is looking unlikely because it's not all that are affected)
Your ISP's DNS lookup tables

If resetting the router doesn't fix it, see if you can get a trouble ticket raised by your ISP.

On the Open DNS thing, there was an interesting link in another topic here (See Open DNS Privacy).
http://www.sciencetext.com/opendns-redux.html

There's a very good tutorial about using Open DNS here: http://www.opendns.com/support/videos/getstarted/
If the problem is your ISP's DNS servers, this will prove it.

Thanks Dave will take a look in the "very near future"
But to many other people "world-wide" are suffering the same problem so it can't really be just an isolated problem with only me.

Fudgem
I am still using AVG, so no it can't be the same Avast problem, but thanks all the same.

Update:
Thedemonsden site seems to be okay at the moment, but it is "now" effecting the Photobucket site.

************
I have to try and type quickly as I seem to have developed a "NEW" problem, my monitors power keeps going off leaving me with a blank screen, although I am pretty sure it is a problem with the "Powerdown" adaptor.
