life's great mystery
« on: November 08, 2008, 02:40:05 PM »

What is it about duvet sets ? ???

TD goes off to town in search of some bedlinen in the way of a duvet set.
His requirements are simple, merely a set consisting of :-
a) duvet cover
b) two pillow cases
c) valance sheet
d) ordinary sheet

Why is it that each and every set I saw had one or other of these items, usually the plain sheet, not included in the set ?

And...............and this is the rub...........why then when you trudge round the shops looking at plain sheets, can you never get one to match ?  :'(

TD is baffled, The late Mrs. TD used to manage this sort of thing in a trice but it seems to be beyond my limited capability.

TD will have to go to bed in something looking like a polychromatic heap on a rag-and-bone man's cart.

Sigh.

It's one of those things which women do to drive men mad, I'm afraid.

I think the problem is that when duvet's came around we weren't expected to use a top sheet, so suppliers have never taken this into consideration.
(although I have always-ed use one)

A top sheet helps to protect the duvet cover, the same as a bottom sheet helps to protect the mattress

Kate, sheets are easier to wash and replace on the bed than duvet covers are.

I do use a top sheet, so that saves washing the duvet cover so often, that usually happens when muddy paws start to make a pattern of their own on the cover. :'(

I tend to buy sheets, then pick up a cover somewhere near to matching, mind the last ones I bought were bright turquoise (but a very good bargain), they do tend to clash a bit with everything, the secret is to keep them hidden under the duvet.

I can see that they might be easier to replace, but I know TD has a washing machine, because Wee Hughie has just fixed it, and if they are cotton or polyester they aren't much different to a sheet  for drying   :-\  Floydy, you DO know the secret of putting on a duvet cover easily don't you ?   ;D

Thus far that is still one of life's great mysteries as far as I'm concerned.

Yes this is a pain in the proverbial... I use a top sheet too so that the duvet cover doesn't have to be washed so often.  Hope you manage to find what you want TD, other than that, think it will have to be the nearest colour or a contrasting colour to coordinate.  Might set a trend there if you do lol.

My pet hate is the all in one valance and bottom sheet - Now they really are too much hard work washing and ironing - avoid at all costs.

I tend to stick to the sets where they just sell the matching duvet cover + 2 pillow cases.
I then buy  a co-ordinating fitted bottom sheet and 2 pillow cases for the "underneath" pillows.

Most stores will do a large range of co-ordinating colours of which you buy what you want from a selection of valance covers, fitted sheets, flat sheets and pillow cases.
It often works out much cheaper this way too, rather the ones that come with the set.
