The Northern Lights
« on: November 06, 2008, 11:50:21 PM »

The Northern Lights over  Yellow Knife, Canada.

THIS IS A FIRE RAINBOW - THE RAREST OF ALL NATURALLY OCCURRING ATMOSPHERIC  PHENOMENA.

THE PICTURE WAS CAPTURED THIS WEEK ON THE IDAHO / WASHINGTON BORDER.

THE EVENT LASTED ABOUT 1 HOUR.

CLOUDS HAVE TO BE CIRRUS, AT LEAST 20K FEET IN THE AIR, WITH JUST THE RIGHT AMOUNT  OF ICE CRYSTALS AND THE SUN HAS TO HIT THE CLOUDS AT PRECISELY 58 DEGREES.

Enjoy!

Its about the only thing I miss about living in the far North of Scotland. Well that and midsummer when it doesn't really get dark. Winter was a whole different ball game :D

I've never seen the "Fire Rainbow" though - that is truly spectacular. I'm very jealous :)

Oh Wow!  What wonderful photographs and how spectacular it must be to see it all for real...sigh.  Like Kitz I'd love to see it in real life, but as I can't, thank you for the beautiful photos Dave.

Great  photo's  :)

It must have been about 18 years we had nice aurora over South Derbyshire, it was a great site to see, it was like the clouds were dancing.
There must have been a massive solar prominence that was directed at the earth.   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_prominence

Good photo of a solar prominence (make sure you have the date of November 7 2008, set top right ) http://www.spaceweather.com/

That really is spectacular, it's also something I would like to see, that and the midnight sun, dunno why, just one of those strange urges, perhaps I'm getting all spiritual. :D

Mike,
It was the 1845 LA to LHR and to think the pilot and all those passengers missed the view as they were above and passed it.
