Ubuntu 8.10
« on: October 31, 2008, 09:07:58 AM »

Hi All,

I have been recently considering trying out Linux.

I have quite an old machine up the attic which is about 7years old and still runs! The processor hasn't even got 1GHz andI think it has like 64mb of RAM.

Would it run Linux at all as I was considering running it as a server for the home network?

Thanks

Jamie

If you've only got 64 MB of RAM I'm afraid that you don't stand a chance with any of the mainstream desktop distros. Even Damn Small Linux needs 128 MB. For a server, a minimal base install of Debian would fit the bill, but it would need some Linux experience to set it up.

Aha, I have just looked, it has 128mb ram, 64mb is graphics.

All I want to do really is give Linux a try, but I don't want to use my main desktop, could I run the normal Ubuntu 8.10 on that machine or does it just not fit the bill?

Thanks

Damn, I just got rid of a couple of 256 MB SDRAM chips, otherwise you could have gladly had them.

Ubuntu needs a minimum of 256 MB, so I would say that it's out of the running. One which might suit you is TinyMe which is a derivative of PCLinuxOS designed for use on older PCs. It claims to run (just) in 64 MB and very well in 128 MB. I haven't tried it myself, but I imagine that the installation process will be very similar to the example in the tutorial up above.

Ok, many thanks Roseway.

I may have some spare RAM around the place so will see if I have any for the PC, otherwise will try some of the suggestions you gave.

Will have a look at the sticky's later and I might take a look at it over the weekend :)

Thanks again ;D

Ok, I have decided I would like to run it on my main PC under a partition.

How would I go around making a partition on Vista?

I have been playing with BELserver it's based on PCLinux try it , Download the Basic one from http://pclosbe.org/mwiki/index.php?title=Main_Page.

But If I was you I would try PCLinux2007 first to get used to Linux  from   http://www.pclinuxos.com/index.php? then go on to a server later.
Don't go for MiniMe Or TinyMe (not until you have got the hang of things ), PCLinux2007 has most things installed already .
You download the .iso file and burn an Image to a CD or DVD and can put it in your computer and run it from the CD (see Eric's Tutorials  ;) ).
Join there forums.
I have dual boot  (PCLinux and XP ) but I have not booted into XP for more than a year. :)
