The attached shows it now - the dishwasher is running.

The first graph was using the "live" router stats link on the site you pointed me to.  The later ones were using the programme resident on my machine - see where the confusion arises from.  Now I am confused!

The live link shows the data from the Routerstats author's router, not yours.

There's really nothing to see there - the graph doesn't have any spikes or anything like that which would indicate a problem. I think you need to leave routerstats running until the intermittent fault reappears, then we should see what kind of interference it is.

Right now the line looks fine.. the smallish dips arent anything to be concerned about and they are normal fluctuations that you could expect to see on any line.

Like eric says you would appear to be an intermittant fault.. and the trick is going to be catching it on Routerstats to see if it can help track down any indication where the noise is coming from.

A quick reminder to set routerstats to record and save your logs, otherwise they overwrite.
Its also perhaps an idea to create a new folder to store them in

Go to settings (the cog icon) >
Select the "Log" Tab >
Tick enable log
Browse to the folder location
Tick "Start new log each day"
Click "Save"

THX guys - all now set up and running.  The live stats thing was confusing - a little too much sherbet after watching the Grand Prix maybe? ;)

Will report back if/when I catch it.

Got it!

Connection dropped out totally this morning after a HUGE series of interference spikes.  The neighbouring area had a power cut and Tesco's Diesel generator backup came on, obliterating almost all short wave radio as well (I dabble in that as well).  Now we have a source of interference, I will get on to the powers that be.  Fingers crossed guys.

Tesco have ordered in a portable backup generator (apparently the size of a shipping container) to replace the ageing genset and that will arrive tomorrow.  They don't like to upset the "powers that be" or neighbours .... according to the store manager.  To be honest, Tesco are pretty good at the neighbourly thing and far better than the CoOp who owned the store before them.  BT has also done some sort of complete clear down and we are back up to a sensible speed again.  Fingers crossed, since I depend on my home connection to work for a living.

True to their word - the "Powertainer" arrived at 7am this morning and was hooked up by 8:30am - not bad.  They then dug into the old set and have found massive burning/smouldering damage in an inverter within the unit - goodness knows why they need an inverter.

Tesco - does what it says on the tin - at least for our village.

My adsl line is monitored by a "SamKnows" box and the download looks like the attached pic - monitored since May 08.  Any comments?

Actual download speeds are affected by all sorts of factors, such as congestion, ISP traffic management, server performance, etc. as well as the quality of the ADSL connection itself. So although there's a big variation in speed over time it's difficult to reach any conclusions about the cause.
