Pro's and con's of using my TV as a computer moitor
« on: October 15, 2008, 05:26:02 PM »

Hello

Due to the current space in my room i have to swap my pc monitor and TV around when ever i want to use either of them, i was wondering if it might be worth using my TV as a Monitor for my pc and then still be able to keep it in its place for normal tv use,ps3 and dvds

does this sound like a good plan or are there things i have not considered?

Thanks in advance

I don't see why not however what if someone wants to watch TV or PS3 when you are on the PC?

IMHO I would use a seperate monitor if its a computer for normal use, although if its a Media Center PC then consider connecting it to your TV as an option?

I use my Laptop to watch videos etc off the iPlayer and iTunes Movie Rentals. I simply have a VGA cable and an Audio 3.5mm connector at the side for when I need to watch something:)

Its upto you I suppose?

I have a media center PC that only uses a TV for output.
Admittedly I forget that its a PC and seldom work on it (read never) because of the set up in my lounge.... but it could be done.
Depends on your TV and what the quality is like.  Try it and see.

A lot will depend on the TV............LCD or CRT?
In general terms, a television will use a lower resolution, so the picture may appear in soft focus, especially for viewing text.
The only way to be certain is to try it and see if it displays an acceptable image.

General discussion here about it.

Another problem to be aware of is that TV uses overscan, i.e. the actual picture is larger than the display area. This is fine with TV pictures, but really messes up a computer display. You may find that the TV offers a choice of TV resolutions and PC resolutions, and that the latter are properly sized on the screen. But some LCD TVs (my cheapo Bush is an example) overscan on all resolutions, and it's not a lot of fun using one of these as a computer display.
