Buffalo External Hard Drive
« on: October 07, 2008, 09:34:20 AM »

This looks a good price for a 500GB external HD.The Buffalo brand is one I have heard of but don't know of anyone who has one.Does this look a decent buy.I have been looking for some time about getting and external back up drive. This would be plenty big enough for my needs, just want something that is easy to use.

That looks pretty good. I use a Buffalo Linkstation (as does Kitz I believe) and it's served me very well for a couple of years now. The Linkstation is a network connected device, so it's more flexible than the USB-connected Drivestation, but if you only want to back up from a single PC then the Drivestation would probably suit very well.

Youve probably heard of Buffalo before since they have a good reputation for Network Storage Devices and Cable Routers.
Like Eric says I use a Buffalo LinkStation as a network back-up device and I have no problems with it.  The only wee gripe I have is that although I have GigaBit Network, transfer isnt quite as fast as Id like it to be.

As well as the LinkStation which periodically backs up certain data, I also have a HD2Go which I use to mirror the drives in my main PC.  The HD2Go connects via SATA.. but theres not reason why the USB solution shouldnt work in a similar way.

Looks like a decent price - and it includes the Memeo Autobackup software...  Id be very tempted if I was looking for a solution - and if I didnt already have the HD2Go, then my wallet would be twitching.

Just an update,

I have been recommended  to get an external hard drive with its own power supply. Is this a must have when considering an ext HD.

I still like the look of the Buffalo Drive Station, doe this have the above mentioned,if not what else would anyone else recommend.

I don't need anything bigger than 500GB.
USB2  would be fine,as I only use one PC.
Doesn't need to be a portable drive,it will just sit at the side of my desk top.

The Buffalo Drivestation does have it's own power supply............on the attached pic. the power lead and transformer are on the left front.

You need it's own power connection, the usb connection would not cope the power demand from the drive.

UnkyUb, I just pulled an image off the great interwebbie at random and have no idea if this one is new or old.
Ebuyer, I'm sure, will ahve the newest version, but I would think that will certainly have it's own power.....they all do.

Happy buying.. ;D

Hi Unky - we have exactly the model you are contemplating - 5 Star product from a 5 Star company.  The bundled software is good and simple to set up too.  At the price they are quoting, it's a steal - go for it!

I see you are still posting, unkyUb.

You were lucky to find a hostel with an internet connection.  :D
