Moving away from Pipex
« on: October 06, 2008, 04:23:54 PM »

I've been with Pipex for around 6 years now, joined around September 2002.
Now they have been taken over by Tiscali service seems to be a lot worse.
So it's time for change.

Anyway my question is what is the speed my line is capable of?

My current sync speed is 576 Down, 288 Up.
Been the same since 2002.

My line length according to Mr Crow flying is around 3.5km.
I read somewhere that line length for 0.5Mbps service in 2002 was under 6km.  Is this correct?

I'm using a Netgear 834G router -

Down Line Attentuation - 53dB
SNR Margin - 28dB

According to a few online checkers my max speed is 0.5Mbp.
Will moving to a MAX product help with speed?

Thanks,
Al.

>> Mr Crow flying is around 3.5km

Whilst a guide straight-line distance isnt too good of an indicator since BT cabling is more likely to follow major roads.  Try the adsl checker which may give more of an indication.

Attenuation also plays a factor in your maximum speed, as some lines have more copper than others ..  based on 53dB and if your line was good, then you should get a maximum of around 4128 kbps.
Bear in mind both of those are just guides based on average figures.

>> According to a few online checkers my max speed is 0.5Mbp.

That just looks like a record of the speed that youre on now..what does the result of my checker return that BTw says for your line on Max?

>> Will moving to a MAX product help with speed?

Most certainly should do :)

Hey thanks for speedy reply!!

Just tried that adsl checker.
Fixed adsl, adsl max etc all estimate 0.5Mb
How can I tell what type of product I'm on now...

I've been on the same package from Pipex since 2002.
I requested a mac code last week and was suppose to receive it today.
Phoned up to request it and they stated that mac code had failed to generate?
Is that possible?  They tell me I have to wait another 5 days now for another request to go through.

Thanks,
Al

The checks are done from the BTw database which is conservative..  its also likely that if not many people in your area are on max then they dont have enough figures to base it on and its based on current speeds.

Quote
576 Down, 288 Up.
Would indicate a fixed 512 connection.

Hey thanks for the additional info on mac codes.

I phoned up Pipex this morning and stated the 5 day ofcom rule.
Funny enough they gave me the mac code instantly....what happened to we have to request it and wait for 5 days.

Just off the phone to BE broadband.
They reckon I can't get adsl due to my line length which according to the BT database is 9km!?
And their line length limit for orders is under 6km.

I've had adsl since 2002 and I'm pretty sure the line length restriction was around 5.5km when I got Pipex.

I'm confused!!

Since I dont know your linestats or any details about your line,  it is hard to say.

Be uses adsl2+ technology which generally would give you faster speeds... but on longer lines there reaches a point when it has no benefit over adsl1.
ADSL2+ utilises higher frequencies than ADSL1 and at the higher frequencies lines can become more unstable.
Your attenuation would also increase by circa 3dB when moving over to adsl2+ :/

Current stats from NetGear 834G Router

Sync Speed   576 Up 288 Down
Attenuation   53 Down 31 Up
~ SNR Margin   28 down 23 Up

Does that help?

Your attenuation of 53 dB is quite high but well within limits for an ADSL Max service. The speed calculator indicates that your line length is about 3.84 km and you could get a connection speed of about 4 Mbps, either on ADSL Max or on ADSL2+. So it looks as though the information from the BT database is wrong.

Ok I think I have finally escaped the clutches of Pipex.
I just got activated today with ukonline.

Pipex are still calling me with a mac code and also sent me 4 letters today with the mac code all stating that I had 25 days to use the code before it expired based on 4 different dates.
Even called me this afternoon stating I wouldn't be able to get more speed than they were offering and there was no point in leaving.  A bit late considering I had already migrated to ukonline this morning.

Went for the Lite package and am currently downloading at an unbelievable 200k a second. Woo hoo!!

Current stats are -
ADSL Link                Downstream Upstream
Sync Speed              2048 kbps    256 kbps
Line Attenuation      51.0 db         28.0 db
Noise Margin            20.8 db        13.0 db

Based on these line stats do you think I could go even quicker.  Strange thing is my upload sync speed with Pipex was 288kbps, why has it went down?  If you compare my line stats with Pipex the attentuation has gone down also.

I'm assuming I'm on the llu adsl+ rp product.

Thanks for your help.  If i didn't read this forum I would still be paying 20 quid for a 0.5 Mbp link

Thanks
Al

Hi allyli

>> I wouldn't be able to get more speed than they were offering and there was no point in leaving.

Well you proved them wrong :)  We said you could get more - its just unfortunate that the database appeared to be wrong  ;D

>> Strange thing is my upload sync speed with Pipex was 288kbps

Thats the sign of UKO (and sky) 2Mbps configuration on one of their own MSANs.
A BTw DSLAM is set at 2272/288, whilst Easynet set it at 2048/256

>> If you compare my line stats with Pipex the attentuation has gone down also. - on these line stats do you think I could go even quicker.

Slightly different cofiguration of the dslams/MSANs can sometimes make a difference.  Based on your old stats I said around 4128, with the new attenuation possibly somewhere around 4.5Mb or slightly more.  Depends how good your line is, and how much your SNRM varies over the day.
If you went for the next package up it would give you up to 768kbps upstream.

>> I'm assuming I'm on the llu adsl+ rp product

It would certainly look like it

>> Thanks for your help.  If i didn't read this forum I would still be paying 20 quid for a 0.5 Mbp link

Youre very welcome.  Glad we could help.

Just for your info.
I have line attenuation of 55-57 dB.
I ugraded from a fixed 512 service about 3 months ago, am on AOL ADSL Max, but not LLU.
After the training period which set my noise margin at 9 dB, I now connect as follows.
Download sync between 3456 and 3776, giving me an IP profile of 3000.
Upload always 448.
