Help! No synch/dsl light flashing
« on: December 16, 2006, 10:01:22 PM »

Hello everyone, My first post here in the hope that someone can advise me where the problem lies, BT, router or elsewhere.
My problem is that my DSL light flashes every 5 minutes indicating No synch and drops the broadband connection. I'm using BT standard broadband (speed 1.1Mbps) with a voyager 205 router. I have replaced both microfilters and contacted BT about the problem. Their response being switch off router and computer, unplug everything, leave for 2 minutes, reconnect and reboot, which has'nt solved the problem. I attach my telnet log in the hope that someone can help me.

Hi there, and an official welcome to the forum :)

From the looks of your log the ADSL connection stats (signal to noise margin/line attenuation) look fine for receiving your 1meg broadband service.

Unless there are major fluctuations, which your log doesn't indicate something is causing the DSL to drop after PPP authentication (log on basically). Whatever is causing this is the problem.

So, some simple questions...

Is this a new problem? Or are you new to broadband?

By the looks of the stats are you on a fixed 1meg product? Or DSL Max?

Have you tried another router or modem to see if the DSL drops out the same?

Do you have any noise on your phone line or have particular problems with certain weather, conditions etc?

Have you tried another cable?

Are all sockets microfiltered?

Have you tried direct into your master test socket incase you have interference on any extension wiring?

This does seem a rather odd problem. Most of the time connections drop out because they are trying to sync at a speed beyond the capibility of the signal/signal margin available, yet your stats look quite comfortable.

Thanks for the welcome.
Its not a new problem. I've had it on and off for a while, but lately it has got worse. I've been on broadband for a while and I'm on 1mb fixed due to the length of line.
Microfilters are fitted and I've recently renewed them. No noise on the phone line and the problem is'nt weather dependent.
I have'nt tried a new router or cable so that will probably be the next avenue of approach. BT are also working on the problem and here is their list of suggestions -

Please be informed that I ran line test on your broadband line and found that there is no issue with your broadband line. Please note that this issue occurs due to the following reasons:

? Cables are not connected properly.
? EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) devices placed near the router.
? Placement of router.
? Faulty micro-filter and firewall settings.

To diagnose this issue, please perform the following steps to resolve the issue:

Step 1. Check the connection of the cables:

1. Shut down the computer.
2. Shut down the modem/router.
3. Unplug all cables from modem/router.
4. Wait for 10 seconds.
5. Plug all cables back in.
6. Turn on modem/router.
7. Turn on computer.

Step 2. Check if you have any of the following devices that cause potential EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) placed near the router and remove them:

1. Halogen desk lamps with dimmers.
2. Any electrical dimmer switch.
3. Electronic devices, such as stereo speakers.
4. Televisions, monitors, microwave ovens, etc.
5. Electronic insect electrocution devices (bug zappers).
6. Low quality 900MHz cordless telephones.
7. Any other emitter of high frequency electromagnetic radiation.

Step 3: Check the placement of the router:

1. Router should not be placed on the carpet floor.
2. It must not be placed on the computer. It is advisable to place the router over a wooden table.
3. It should be placed 2 feet away from the computer.

Step 4: Check the micro filter and firewall settings:

Note: If you use a micro filter to separate your telephone and broadband please try the below step:

1. Remove the micro filter and connect your broadband cable directly to the wall jack and check for the connection. If it is working fine, then there is a problem with the micro filter, so please change the micro filter.

2. If the issue still persists, I request you to disable the firewall and anti-virus software and try to access the Internet. If you are able to access without any issues, then please contact your firewall/anti-virus vendor to change the settings in it.

If the problem still persists, please provide the additional information to assist you further:

1. What is the make and model of your router along with the light status?
2. What Operating System are you using (e.g. Windows 98 SE, Windows XP, MacOS X 10.2)?
3. What is your alternate contact number?
4. How many telephone sockets do you have at your premises?
5. Are you connecting any other devices to your telephone line (e.g. Fax machine, Skybox, Gaming devices, Alarms)?

I've done steps 1-3 and step 4 is covered by the new filters. Any further help is appreciated.

Hmm, sounds interesting. Indeed be aware that extension wiring can induce electromagnetic interference from all around your home depending what it passes/proximity to mains power etc. This is why it might be an idea to have a go in the master test socket (if you have an NTE5 type master socket).

I know ages ago we had a problem with the service where it would refuse to hold sync, and leaving the router unplugged for around 30 minutes or so and then cold starting it brought it back to life, however that was a one of glitch and only ever happened a couple of times.

The BT Line test would have been a remote resistance test, the results of which would highlight problems such as any line shorting, damp problems etc which produce extra levels of line resistance. Then again, as you say the line seems healthy and is noise free. Indeed your ADSL stats looked quite happy as well.

It might be time to borrow another router or modem to try out on your ADSL just to see if this is a straight forward equipment fault, but first I would plug into the test socket if you have one, as this helps to remove problems internal to your premises from the equation.

Having now connected direct to the test socket I'm still getting the problem but at different time intervals. I am therefore leaning towards a problem with the router. I think the next move is to borrow a router and see if that solves the problem.

The line is in the range of 43-60 dB for 1Mbps.
The SNR Margin looks fine from the reported figures.

Therefore pointing to something introducing bursts of noise on the line at certain times.
Soms has given good advice.. but something else that occurs when you say its got worse recently....

Good point about xmas lights, but the problem increased before the decs went up. I have plugged into the test socket on the master box and although the timing is not as regular the problem is still there. Having swapped everything possible, the only constant is the router itself. That leads me to believe that the router is on its way out, so I will be replacing it with a netgear dg834. From what I've seen on here and other sites, it has a pretty good writeup. It may even improve my stats.
Thanks to everyone for the advice.

Update- Well, having spent the last couple of days doing fault elimination on my wiring, computer etc. being assured by BT there is no fault on the line and generally tearing my hair out, I conclude that the only constant is the router and it has to go.
Lo and behold, an Email from BT shown below, ooops sorry, there is a fault on the line. T*ssers.

Thank you for your e-mail dated 17th December 2006, your e-mail has been logged under the reference number ***************.

I understand from your e-mail that you still are experiencing problems with broadband connection getting disconnected frequently. I note that you have performed the steps provided in our previous e-mail but the issue remains unresolved. I am sorry our previous advice did not resolve your issue and for the inconvenience caused.

I have done a test on your line and I am sorry to inform you that there is a line fault. I have escalated this issue to our Line Faults department for further diagnosis. They will contact you with an update in the next 2-3 business days.

Thank you for using BT Total Broadband.

Thanks a bunch to BT (not).

Thanks to everyone for their advice.

;DUpdate: Well, following on from BT saying there is a fault on the line, they now say that they have carried out a copper line check and there is'nt a fault. Despite this the problem has been getting less and less regular each day. Since yesterday I have'nt had any no synch/dsl light problems. This logically tells me that the router was always ok and that whatever the fault was, it was external. Possibly some tweaking going on  in the exchange that they did'nt think was relevant. Of course now that the problem is solved my new router turns up(netgear dg834). Having connected it, although my stats have changed slightly it seems to be a much faster router.
Thanks again for everyones help and best wishes to all for Christmas.
