Phew! That's a bit of a monster. Not the best format for general computer use (in my opinion) but great for watching videos.

I'm still contemplating a new monitor  ....I don't rush into buying things  ;D     my existing 17" is, I think, on the blink.  From time to time I get a black border to the right hand side and bottom of the screen...a quick change of resolution and  back solves it, but it's a pain.   Anyway I've been looking for another and have decided that an increase to 19" will be sufficient  ... I don't want it to look like the local cinema  :D    I don't watch films on the computer, just use it for 'general' stuff and photos mainly, with the odd game now and again.   I've found this today on the net ..... and although the description is of course in French I think the gist is easy to follow  ......  and a free French lesson to boot        I wonder if this will do what I want ?  the thing I get confused with  ::)  is the resolution  ... I have my existing resolution set to 1280 x 1024   colour  quality   Highest.. 32 bit.
I note the resolution mentioned on here is 1440 x 900  ...how does that compare with my existing choice and how will it affect my "viewing"  ? As I say I'm a bit "slow" on this aspect   so some easily understood reply would be so much appreciated :)      perhaps I could repay any kindness by helping with the refurbishment of the NC  as I understand Eric is concentrating on the French NC at the moment

AG Neovo H-W19 - Ecran plat LCD 19" 16/10ème avec haut-parleurs intégrés - Résolution WXGA+ 1440 x 900     the price is very inviting ....135 Euros delivered ,  with a three year warranty  at an extra 25 Euros  ...but because it would be a first purchase they offer 10% discount so the price would be back to the 135€ in total.     The speakers are integral, I prefer them to be.    Many thanks for your thoughts.....

That 19-inch monitor is a wide-screen model, Kate. I think you may possibly be disappointed with it, because its height will be less than your 17-inch but it will be a good bit wider. Apart from that, it's a bargain, so long as you can tolerate the tinny sound from the speakers. :)

The thing with monitors today is most tend to be widescreen, and as Eric as pointed out they are not ideal for general computing.I think manufacturers seem to think everyone watches movies on their computer screens.

Sadly everything is going towards widescreen... I'm attempting to hang onto my 4:3 TV for as long as possible.

Well I've been doing a little more delving on the same site  ....and have now found this one  ....

The make is Hanns G .... which, from other delving, is a company well known in Germany.....   based in the Netherlands.    The three year warranty again should cover for any eventualities ...as I expect that within that time scale I MIGHT have to replace this system ... in which case I would go for a decent portable ...... so I don't want to spend so much on a screen now  ......  that's if I do at all    :-\ :'(  I'm undecided  .... now if it were shoes I wouldn't hesitate  ;D
It says it has a DVI connection which I assume is something to do with Digital and I also assume it would be OK with my set up ??  I did say I know nothing about "the innards"  -  well computer innards that is  ! ;)   So I wondered what your view was on this one ...... I won't bother you with every one I look at  :'( :'(    but at least it will give me a guideline ...  the 'tinny' speakers don't worry me ... I only listen to the radio on- line and usually with headphones, and they sound OK  ....  :)

Kate, that looks fine. 'DVI' stands for 'Digital Video Interface' which is an optional higher quality connection between the PC and the monitor. If your PC has a DVI output then you can buy a DVI lead and get the better quality, but otherwise you can ignore the DVI connection and use the VGA connector just like you (presumably) do at present.

You say you don't watch movies, then I wouldn't bother with the expense of buying a DVI (if it does not come supplied) I have 3 TFT monitors, 2 connected with DVI and the other with just the normal connection and to be honest the difference is negligible. However, the quality of the graphics card plays a part in this.

With regards the widescreen issue, as said previously, "you will lose height off the screen" which defeats the object of having a larger monitor. (Unless it rotates, which can then be a good point)

As for the resolution, you should be able to set it to what you want, the resolution stated would be it's "maximum resolution"

As for the inbuilt speakers, again I don't use them because.
1. You still need separate speaker leads to plug into the monitor, (so no saving on cables)
2. They can sound tiny.
3. Being able to adjust the volume can be awkward, whereas ordinary speakers you just turn the volume up or down on the switch as and when required. (although they do help to clear some of the clutter of the desk)

;D  Unc,  at least it won't be back to the dark ages   ....   which might have been the alternative !        :-X

Thanks Kitz and OF  for your input   ...all very useful to me  ....

I've noted the DVI comment Kitz thank you  ...

I don't really fancy the wide screen option ....but at least you cleared up one thing, OF,  and that was the maximum resolution is the one advertised..I thought that was it, but wasn't sure  :'(     as far as tinny speakers  ..  I find the ones on my existing set up, integral,   adeaqute for what I use them for...  I don't listen to music on the computer, just the radio and from time to time use Skype etc...   the headphones I have are adjustable so I just twiddle with those.

Thanks again ...
