Squeezed pictures in Explorer and Photo Gallery
« on: September 20, 2008, 04:04:09 PM »

When opening Explorer (not IE) to see some pics transferred from our XP machine to the new Vista one, the thumbnails appear as normal, than turn into a "stick" effect, as if the sides have collapsed inwards.

Double clicking to open them in Photo Gallery has the same effect (but bigger obviously).

Most are OK (They are all jpgs taken with a digital camera), it's just these ones (which display perfectly if I use a slide show).

Video drivers are up to date, as is Vista SP1 with the latest patches.
I've also ran AV scans.

Any ideas ?

You could try clearing all of the thumbnails and then starting afresh.

See this on how to do it:-

Hope this Helps

Jamie :)

Thanks, but I already tried that.
I also tried opening a pic in a program that would display it properly (Paint) and re-saving, but that makes no difference either  :(

Could you post a Screenshot of the problem as I can't seem to picture it?

Thanks

This the best I can do.
You can see the colours and stuff from the photo in the "stick" so to speak.
If I open it, it looks the same. However, it displays OK in Paint.

Hmmm, I think it is the file, but to be sure.

Is it possible to send me one of the pictures to see if the same happens on my PC?

Attach the pic and then I will save it and see if I can open in Vista and if it has the same effect?

If it does, it is the files, if it doesn't, its the settings on your machine, and we will have something to work on?

Cheers

Right, well I get the exact same thing:-

However, I tried saving it as a PNG in Paint, and that brings it like this:-

I have sent you a copy of the PNG to see what it looks like on your machine ;)

Hi Jamie

That looks normal now  ::)

It's weird why vista moans about some, but not others.

So it looks like a LOT of re-saving for me

How do you get the files off your camera? Copy and Paste?

I usually put the media in the reader, then copy and paste.

I was just wondering if you were using a Wizard in Vista as that has some probs?

Well all I can think is that a setting on you camera may not be correct? Have you got another PC you could try the file on? Otherwise I will try it on my XP laptop and see what it looks like on there?

All the files display OK on our XP laptop, and XP desktop.

The files were already saved to an external disk via the XP desktop.
All I did was bring the disk to the Vista desktop, plug it in, and copied and pasted.

The majority of the files are Ok, its about 10% that are giving me grief.
Unfortunately its 10% of a large amount   ;D

I think it's got to be a Vista thing ?
