Graphics Cards
« on: September 13, 2008, 12:29:17 AM »

I wasn't too sure where to put this one so if one of the mods wants to move it thats fine by me so here goes....

just a quick question before I fall asleep again. Why is it that most graphics cards have a different company name in the front eg. instead on nVidia GeForce 7300GS it's XFX or PEAK nVidia GeForce 7300GS this has confused me for a while but is it nVidia that make the GPU and the other company puts it together or the other way round ?? :)

I doubt very much if they make the cards, they would merely have them made to their specification.
As for the: "XFX or PEAK nVidia GeForce 7300GS" etc, this I would imagine is just a way of showing which model it is.

nVidia is a semiconductor manufacturer - they make chips, including graphics chips. Hardware manufacturers use these chips to make motherboards and plug-in cards, and so these can have numerous different names on the box. But the performance is largely determined by the chips, so that's the most important factor.

I don't think that either Nvidia or ATI actually manufacture graphics cards, only the chipsets, which other manufacturers then use to make the end products.
