IP Throughput speed
« on: September 08, 2008, 11:50:06 AM »

Lo everyone, new to the board.

I put in a search about the problems I'm having, this site came up with some Forum responses.

To be as brief as I can, I'm having problems with my Laptop with broadband & decided to do a BT Speedtest...the feedback was as shown:

BT Tester, the following message came up.

This Test comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
Your DSL connection rate: 8096 kbps(DOWN-STREAM),
448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 7000 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 0 kbps

I have to admit, I'm no expert with Computers, So any advise is much appreciated.

Seemed to take an age to load up IE, so I thought I would do the test.

As i said "i'm not that technically minded", so I'm at a bit of a loss.
But why the hell would it be "0", most people on this forum who have reported the same type of problem at least have some throughput.

Have contacted BT, not much back from them yet. I am busy trying all the normal checks, test socket, filter, etc.

The BT speedtester is an unreliable beast at the best of times, so you can't read anything into that reported value. Are you actually experiencing a problem? What sort of result do you get from the tester which Phil suggested above?

Not at home at the moment, will try when I get in.

It could all be a red herring, if what your saying about the BT tester is true.

Get back with the results later on

cheers

So your download speed was 4749 kbps in that test. This is a fair bit less than your IP profile but not unreasonable. I would say that your connection is working normally.

Also note that those kind of speedtests whihc run from the browser, can only go as fast as your computer.

You should try the BT Speedtester or the Think Broadband tester.

A little confused now, some say don't trust the BT Tester...others say try it.

My laptop has 2gb of Ram, so is ok on the speed issue. I did a repair scan on the laptop (Dell) it detected a problem and said it couldn't fix it & that I should contact my ISP.

When the BT speedtester completes its test it should provide good information, but it's overloaded and often fails to complete. The first test which you reported on showed the download speed as 0 which is obviously nonsense (you wouldn't have a usable connection if the download speed was 0) so I'm assuming that the test didn't complete.

I have no idea what a 'repair scan' does, so I can't comment on that.

Having 2 GB of RAM doesn't guarantee that your laptop is OK for speed. You could (for example) have a badly configured ethernet interface or something like that. But as I said before, it looks as though your connection is working normally. If you do several speed tests at different times and with different speedtesters, and the speed is always a long way below your IP profile, then there might be an issue to be explored.

Thanks for all your input.

Just thinking.. I seem to be having a lot of problems at the moment, can't view Youtube video's, compatibility issues. My laptop has Vista running on it, I'm wondering if this has some bearing on the issues I have ???

It certainly sounds as though something's gone wrong in your laptop. I don't use Windows myself, so I can't help with that, but it might be worth asking a question in the Vista forum.
