USB Kingston Memory Stick For Car Sat-Nav Updates.
« on: March 11, 2026, 09:22:27 PM »

I have a Kingston 64GB memory stick I use for updating the RangeRover car Sat-nav.
Formatted to Fat32 then I have to use Windows (I only have win7 for this as I am all Linux) to run the 'Here' map up date software to load it on the memory stick, then I normally plug it in the car when we a going out for a run of more than 30 to 40 minutes to up-load it.
This memory stick is normally just used for this use,
but  :hmm:
I needed to use the memory stick to put a Linux iso on it to recover another laptop.

After that I formatted it to Fat32 again with 'GParted' running on Linux and wiped all the data.

Loaded map updates ok, tried to load the maps to the car It Says 'Not Recognized'   :o >:(
Repeated this several times still no good.
Used Win7 to format it, no good.
Used the 'Here Maps' software last night to format the stick then loaded maps, now the car does nothing when I plug the USB stick in.

Using Linux to look at the properties .
File system vfat    ???
31,3 GiB used
all the map data seems to be there.

Any Idea what I can try.

Have you checked that the stick definitely only has one partition as I'm wondering if Linux has added one that is not visible to Windows but is to your car.

USB sticks are a bit of an oddity where they can be formatted WITHOUT creating a partition and some quirky devices will fall over if in fact they were formatted with a partition.

GParted for example ALWAYS creates a partition, so Windows may have just obeyed the existing partition layout, rather than doing a complete wipe of the partition table.  You should be able to remove it in Disk Management on Windows or in GParted.

You could also try
Code: [Select]
mkfs.vfat -I /dev/sda (where sda may need to be changed based on what device id the stick is assigned)

This will format the stick to fat32 in Linux WITHOUT creating a partition.

Using 'Konsole' I formatted it ok, loaded maps again, put it in the car USB started the engine, waited, waited a bit more and more, It Did not recognize it at all  :( >:(
Give up with that memory stick, so used one of my new ones and that had a Linux iso on, it then used the above formula to format it, loaded maps took it out on our trip to Rutland today and it worked   :yay:
