Openreach Poles
« on: November 05, 2025, 08:50:37 AM »

In my area there is load of houses are all underground cable for FTTC. Now, Openreach throw in load of new poles (for FTTP) – oh wait! Why waste money on ugly poles as they do often go down in stormy bad weather to knock off FTTP. This is totally unacceptable! Surely they can do FTTP in underground but decided not to be, using FTTP over the poles is madness idea.

Dear Openreach if you are reading this, I will not accept any poles in my area, no thanks. Also, I have informed my local MP to raise complaints about Poles.

@adslmax this was addressed after you asked a few weeks ago - https://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php?topic=28263.msg475925#msg475925 - and I don't think writing to your MP will make any difference. If you don't want FTTP delivered via a pole then don't sign up for it but you aren't going to change Openreach's mind on the delivery method.

@adslmax

take a trip to Littlehampton.

Over 40 years ago, Openreach installed all cables underground.
They should have been one of the first places for FTTP, if all the underground chambers had not collapsed

Every time Openreach go to add further FTTP there the funding is used up almost immediately in repairing the underground chambers.

... if all the underground chambers had not collapsed ...

And I imagine that's exactly why Openreach are putting poles in where @adslmax is.
Where I live FTTC deployment was delayed for over a year while they dug out and repaired the ducts between the exchange and our village cabinet.

My estate has a lot of underground, but not all of it is ducted and thus many places where they need to cross a road and it was direct burial cable, they put new poles.  Its common sense that they're not going to use poles unless there's a very good reason.

This has also been discussed so much on all the broadband forums/websites that I can only presume this is a trolling post, as you can't possible NOT know the countless reasons they do this, given you frequently post to all those sites.

Openreach can do FTTP underground with no problem at all. Why they put all Fibre Optic underground a year ago but now they decided to put up all poles doesn't make any sense at all. My cabinet from FTTC and G.fast side pod was feed fibre optic all the way from Wellington exchange to my cabinet pcp 8. Surely easy job to put FTTP from the cabinet to my property surely can do that?

The pole by the Spar shop is crazy as the spar manager agree with me not safe to put the pole there on the grass park where all the kids play football there and might kick the ball to knock off FTTP cable overhead? Openreach did the poor job at the wrong place!

If that's so, then I am going to stick with my G.fast then.

...

That one fibre from the exchange to cabinet enabled likely 100+ households for VDSL or G.inp. What we don't know is whether the cables from the cabinet to each house are ducted or just dug into the ground so they might have to dig 100+ new trenches to get fibre to each house, hence the poles.

Looks like @adslmax has changed his mind again....  On TBB, he posted on the 24th of October the following 'I have no complaints over Openreach poles. I just concerning peoples might rejected Openreach street poles to stop build Full Fibre. Hope they don't! I just want a full fibre asap! '

Wonder whats changed in the 12 days since that posting?

I have a sneaking suspicion that'll you'll order it as soon as it's available, even if it comes via a pole.

He probably will. Wondering where he heard about poles falling down in bad weather. Most of the village where i live have their telephone service delivered via poles and in the 30 years I've lived there can only remember 1 pole falling down, but that was due to its age it was due to be replaced.

If I want FTTP, I will order it but ...... if I want to stay with G.fast, then I will stick with G.fast. Haven't make up my mind yet on FTTP! I just worrying too much over Poles get knocked down by stormy weather and end up with no broadband.
