Anyone else abandoning Windows?
« on: October 17, 2025, 03:12:09 PM »

I know I am :) No more Win10 support, local accounts being disabled in Win11... I'm out, I think probably for good, unless in very certain edge cases.

I swapped my daughters laptop to Linux to coincide with the loss of support, she hasn't really noticed any difference, it works beautifully.

Friends and family a bit of a different story, I have made the suggestion but I don't really want to become de facto tech support when something doesn't work like it did in Windows  ;D

I think others will be aware of me and Linux, I moved over completely some years ago, never had W8 or W10  ;) When I swapped my wife's laptop to Linux using the KDE desktop she didn't notice either but the she was already using Thunderbird Firefox and LibreOffice on Windows so unless you look closely it is easy to imagine you are still using Windows.

Yes there are things which are more problematic but it's easy for me and my wife does not use much else and don't have to worry about any others needing help, one son is very good and the other works in IT and loves Linux ;)

The irony is when I moved my mum over it was partially because she was already struggling with Windows constantly changing the UI, so it was actually a more stable replacement to move to KDE.

Now she is suffering from dementia its even more critical that she doesn't have the infuriating automatic Windows updates that happen at the most problematic time.

I've been Linux as my main OS for probably well over a decade now but I have a dedicated Windows box primarily for gaming too, so I don't have to worry too much about the mess that is Windows 11 these days as I do not use it for anything mission critical or privacy sensitive.  I'm more concerned that the US and UK governments seem to want to track everything we do.

Yes 18 years ago when Eric put this topic on the forum, I changed over to Linux, but still have Win7 on a separate partition so I can update my car's Sat-Nav's as they only will work on Windows  >:( ,

Also did my wife and daughters laptops.

We all have no problems with PCLinuxos.

As a PCLinuxOS user since retiring in 2007 I have had few problems with it. The recent move from KDE5 to KDE6 has been straightforward. Most Windows users would find a transition to Linux/KDE causes few problems especially if usage is just basic home office tasks (word processing/spreadsheet/email/web browsing).

local accounts being disabled in Win11...

When is this happening? I'm still using local accounts on both my desktop and laptop (both Win 11 Home 25H2 fully updated).

I only use local accounts on my W11-25H2 systems, both Home and Pro. You do get "nagged" occasionally, but that's all.

It certainly seems to be the case that MS is forcing Home users down a route that requires an MS account during initial setup, but that's all, you don't need to use it afterwards. And currently even that requirement is easily bypassed, though I expect MS to make it more difficult over time.
